What’s Up With USF Fan Behavior?

Posted Oct 16, 2009 by Joey Johnston

This is probably not that unusual, but I’m receiving numerous e-mails today from Cincinnati folks complaining about the behavior of University of South Florida fans at Thursday night’s game.

High in the press box on a tight deadline, the media corps can be somewhat oblivious to what’s going on (yes, I did see that one whacko who ran on the field and got gang-tackled by the police). But what is going on out there? Can you offer some tales from the front? Is this a real problem in the stands or is it the normal trash-talking give-and-take between opposing fans?

Enlighten me, please.

Once before, we were called out about being bad fans. Last time, it was lots of talk and very little substantiation, but it made a week of newspaper stories and then it magically went away. This week some Cincy guy wrote that a USF threw a beer bottle at a UC coach - problem is, as we all know, bottles are not sold at RayJay, so that isn’t possible. I’ve seen lots of fights at Bucs games, so I don’t go to Bucs games. It’s usually a beer related problem: somebody drank too much. Of course, Cincy fans were COMPLETE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN last night, 6 big Cincy guys starting a bunch of crap on the way out of RJ and yelling and stuff. If they decided to mix it up in the parking lot, I guess it might’ve been taken as inhospitable.

Joey, maybe you could provide some details and let’s see what happened. section 111 had several Bearcat fans in it, and they remained unscathed.

Who cares… If you travel to an away game, don’t expect everyone to be your best friend. I’ve been to Morgantown, Orlando, Auburn, Tally, and a host of other places… some fans are all right to drink with and others are not so all right. It’s part of the passion that comes with loving your university and playing a big time game. If you want to see bad fan behavior, attend the OU-UT game tomorrow. There is absolute hate between those schools and their fans are unrelenting with each other.

I was sitting in section 239.  This section usually has Alumni and families sitting in it.  I have never seen so many fights at a USF game.  There must of been 6 or 7 fights that broke out…mostly between USF fans who got too drunk.  I even saw USF fans picking fights with older women(ages 40+) who had asked them to stop cursing in front of their kids.  Some families had to get up and leave early becuase of how hostile the fans were getting.  I even saw one unruly USF student hitting a cop over by the Pirate ship!

Cincy fans were not 100% innocent.  There was one group in the section next to us who was very obnoxious and taunted anyone they could all night.

Sad.

PS There were plastic beer bottles being sold by the beer vendors.

tboned, my understanding is that when you buy a beer, the vendor pours it into a cup so you don’t have a bottle or can to throw. I won’t pay Malcolm Glazer the price of a 6-pack for 1 beer, so I haven’t purchased one at RayJay in about 10 years, so I may be mistaken.

As far as fights and cursing, everyone needs to understabd that it is a municipal stadium, there are ushers at the end of every aisle, and numerous sheriff’s deputies for every section. if you see ANYTHING like a fight or cursing or any other stuff you don’t want your children exposed to, flag down an usher or deputy and explain the situation. They will observe and 90% of the time REMOVE the offending person, regardless of status or seat selection. I have seen well dressed fans in expensive seats escorted out because they kept cussing. Simple as that. Leavitt should announce that at the start of games instead of the silly respect-a-bull thing

The few times in 12 years that we get these reports is also when there is day-long tailgating going on. I think Randy Edsall (UConn) likes to say that our players play dirty and scratch at his players eyes, whether it happens or not. Look for that annual comment after the Uconn game. but I would like to see whatever evidence there is instead of asking all 64000 USF fans to say they saw the same fight because it will look like there were 64000 fights, and i agree, much worse happens elsewhere, so I don’t go to our road games for that reason

I never understood why people get so emotional over their team and believe it’s ok to abuse fans of other team.  It’s just a game - what’s the big deal!? I was out of town for game, but have witnessed stupid behavior by USF fans in past, but large majority of Bull fans are respectful to others.  I generally don’t sit near student section where more immature behavior is expected, but not sure if that’s area where these incidents occurred?  Our society is plagued by people-worshipping idiots that get their self-worth from their athletic teams. It’s a social pathology without a cure it seems and requires that decent people not tolerate indecent, vulger behavior.

dalatorr,

The beer vendors who walk the isles were selling beer in plastic bottles and would hand the bottle, minus the bottle cap, to the customer.

I didnt see anyone throwing the bottles but I suppose it could happen.

dalatorr,

No, there wasnt just one fight at this game.  Usually our fans are better behaved and the section where I have season tickets is usually well behaved.  However, the Cinci game was pretty bad.  There are ushers and cops…but they were swamped with trying to handle the volumne of unruly people this particular night.

I was at the FSU game and saw both team’s fans behave VERY respectful.  I did not see one fight at this game.

The Tampa Bay area has a well deserved reputation and nothing has changed in 20 years !!
