What to watch for when the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies travel to face the Puerto Rico Islanders on Saturday night at 8:05 p.m.

1. TIGHTEN UP: The Rowdies defense has not played badly this season, but it has to stop making the sort of mental errors that have led to goals in recent outings. The side has recorded only two shutouts this season, and even in games where they have won, goalkeeper Daryl Sattler has been called upon to make good saves to bail out his teammates.

While Coach Paul Dalglish and his defenders have spoken about the need to be more patient and not try to win balls that are unwinnable, putting that into practice tonight will be crucial against an Islanders squad that has made teams pay for mistakes in the past. Keeping their shape and not leaving their feet in challenges will be crucial to keep the Islanders at bay.

2. SWITCH THE PLAY: In their first game against the Rowdies, and in subsequent games, the Islanders have typically kept a very narrow back line that shifts from side to side. The Rowdies should try to keep moving the ball wide to try and get one-on-one opportunities for players like Pascal Millien, JJ Adjeman-Pamboe, Long Tan and Stanley Nyazamba to work in and provide service for Aaron Wheeler and Aaron King.

The other key will be getting runners into the area, especially at the back post. Puerto Rico goalkeeper Bill Gaudette is an excellent shot-stopper, but he seems to struggle at times judging crosses. Get him moving and in two minds as to whether to stay or come and it could offer some excellent scoring opportunities.

3. MAINTAIN INTENSITY: The Rowdies have made excellent starts to games, even in the past two losses. What has happened, though, is that as a half has continued, the intensity of the side has dropped, allowing its opponent to start dictating the rhythm of the game.

While it’s important that the Rowdies again start fast, they need to maintain that intensity throughout the full 90 minutes. If they do, they have an excellent chance of getting back on a winning track and bridging the gap between the side and the Austin Aztex at the top of the USL Conference.
