Bucs Report
What To Do At Receiver?

Tampa Bay will play its final preseason game tonight, and I don’t know about you guys, but I’m still curious about how the receiving crew is going to look this season.

We all know Tampa Bay needs playmakers, but I was thinking this morning and wondered “Does Tampa Bay have more playmakers than it did last year?”

As I see it, here are the players likely to make this year’s team:

1. Joey Galloway - We all know what he brings to the table when healthy.

2. Antonio Bryant - Could be a good compliment to Galloway.

3. Ike Hilliard - Not flashy, but reliable.

4. Dexter Jackson - Can’t cut a second round draft pick.

5. Maurice Stovall - Only one touchdown in two seasons, but still young.

6. Michael Clayton - Everyone knows his story.

That means the bubble guys are (assuming Tampa Bay does not carry seven receivers):

1. Micheal Spurlock - Still a great return option.

2. Brian Clark - Got to love what he has done this preseason.

3. Chad Lucas - Still has potential.

4. Cortez Hankton - Have not seen enough to really judge.

Who are the receivers you would keep from the current group and why? Are there any bubble guys you would like to keep?

And for those of you who keep asking, no, we’re not cutting Ira Kaufman and Martin Fennelly on Saturday.  LOL

Here is a video you Bucs fans will love. Can any other Bucs receiver make this highlight reel in 2008 other than Galloway?

Trade Galloway, Clayton and Hilliard and go with the younger guys. It won’t happen, Gruden is too thickheaded. Of the three, Hilliard is the more reliable. Galloway’s shoulder is suspect over the course of the season. My hunch is that the groin was a smokescreen. This team is not going to win a Super Bowl with their QB situation and without a dominant receiver, although Antonio Bryant did look like one when he played. Bryant, Stoval, Jackson, Clark, Lucas, Hankton, and Spurlock. If Allen could package the older ones for Boldin do it.

I really like the comment about C. lucas and Clark being natural receivers...I think they really fit well with the bucs.

Strings, that may just be the closest thing to Blasphemey that I’ve read.
Good luck with the responses.

Not looking to ignite the flame throwers here - just a comment to stimulate some out of the box thought - but is Galloway really our #1?

No question he can burn and he’s done some scoring, but he’s also dropped some big ones and come up lame more than once.  No help when needed last year ...

No disrespect to Joey, but could Jackson net the same results by the end of the season in his place?  And along with Spurlock, assure the return game is the best we’ve had?

Again, just thinking that Galloway being the guy may not be the “hard core” bottom line.

I SEEM TO REMEMBER SEVERAL COMPLETE DEEP PASSES LAST SEASON?????MUST BE A FARVE FAN...HURTS DOESN’T IT

It doesn’t matter who the recievers are because we don’t have a QB(Garcia) that get the ball down field.

If you can’t trade Clayton for anything, give a draft choice and Clayton to anyone who would take him.

Wow, these are all some good comments! NK. Everyone makes valid points.

Can’t cut Spurloack after he finally broke that horrible no run back streak for us last year. I think he deserves another year just for that alone.

It’s a shame about Paris Warren…

I like the comment from TBO that they won’t cut Ira or Martin. I think Clayton will prove this year he is worthy. Of the bubble guys, I like Clark the best by far as a reciever, but Spurlock is good with returns. Tough choices. I believe they can keep 7 WR. Dexter Jackson needs to step it up. Better players may get cut

Galloway
Bryant
Hilliard
Stovall
Clayton
Jackson

If the Bucs had Joey & Bryant 1 & 2, I would like to see them rotate the other 4 and use more 4- or 5-wr sets.

I hope they keep a 7th receiver:
Spurlock

I like Clark & Lucas as well.

time to cut ties with hilliard and clayton.  they are both good guys but they have nothing more to offer.  i think the top 4 are cut and dry.  then i pick clark and lucas because they actually look natural at WR.

1. J GALLOWAY
2. A BRYANT
3. M STOVALL
4. D JACKSON
5. B CLARK
6. C LUCAS

What about Aqib Talib?  He played WR in Kansas, lets give him a shot.

Keep Clark and Spurlock on the practice squad. Once Dexter Jackson gets going he’ll start breaking big time gains but keep spurlock in case Jackson gets hurt.  Clayton has gotta stay for now(if he sucks again use him in a trade, someone will bite on him), Antonio Bryant should start in my opinion he makes plays with his speed. Galloway is high maintenance but it has payed off to this point, rotate Ike Hilliard the same way we did last year.

We should keep Brian Clark based on performance and not because he’s an undrafted FA.He displayed poise, consisentency, and played heads up ball.He has reliable hands. Hilliard and Clayton drop enough passes for it not to go unnoticed. They often performs like a FA. Clifton Smith performed like a 2nd rounder and D. Jackson performed like a FA. Call a spade a spade.Yes, Spurlock ran back a TD last year, but have you watched him try to catch a pass when it really matters, he appears to be afraid...watch previous tapes. We continues to rely on Galloway and forget the risk of him being injured are high due to age and history with injuries.  FYI, Keep those that play consistently...FA or any rounder.

I say we cut our losses with Galloway and trade for Boldin.  Give him a new contract and he’ll be happy.  And so will we.

JH, it would be more like Clayton, Simms, and #2 pick.  Plus, Clayton isn’t under K after this year so they’d have to sign him to a mulityear deal to lock him up (and what team in their right mind would do that based on his track record).

Posted by  JD, Tampa on 08/28  at  12:06 PM

Cut Clayton, please!  He is a huge under-achiever.

Posted by  charles, kc,mo on 08/28  at  11:59 AM

The reason most passing plays go to galloway is he doesnt drop the ball and he is a threat to go all the way everytime he catches the ball.  Also he gets open.  If your Qb doesnt have confidence in a WR he wont throw it to him.  Dont get me wrong, I like Clayton and would love to see him have a good year, i think his main problen the last couple of yrs have been injuries.  Hopefully this yr will be diffrent.

Is the video indicative of this year’s Blaze #84 highlights?  If so, looks like a lot of DNP - pulled groin in the future

Posted by  DJ, MO on 08/28  at  11:50 AM

I am always hearing and reading about all of the excitement surrounding Joey Galloway and all other receivers lack of production, but every weekend while watching the Bucs I notice that almost 85 - 90% of passes or either thrown to Joey Galloway or a check down to a running back or one of Hillards 3 yard receptions.  It seems that every play is designed to go to Galloway.  Its know wonder that when the season is over Galloway is responsible for much of the passing game.

Posted by  charles, kc,mo on 08/28  at  11:46 AM

cVal What you are saying is that in Claytons rookie season he had a better coach and QB then he has now.  Thats crazy.  The diffrence was that he did not drop as many balls his rookie season, also we had no other WR so he got thrown to more often.  If you look at his avg ypc it was 14.  Gallaway last year avg 18 ypc.  Also if you check our main QB was greise back then.  He didnt have Brady or manning.  Bottom line if he catches the ball more often we would throw it to him more.

Posted by  CVal, Nashville on 08/28  at  11:27 AM

Try this on for size. For a WR to get big numbers, you need a real QB.  Teamed with Brady, Manning, or Favre, Clayton would be a phenom.  Gruden’s plan and Garcia’s limited ability to pass dinky-do (5 yards), is the reason you don’t see the explosive guy you saw as a rookie. Sorry, my opinion.

I agree we should try to get something for Clayton. How about this trade Clayton & Sims to Cardinals for Boldin?
