He couldn’t relax until those final letter-of-intents arrived off the fax, but in the end, new USF coach Skip Holtz got the players the Bulls coveted most: Miami Northwestern DT Todd Chandler and Hillsborough High CB Terrence Mitchell.
The final letter rolled in from Alabama offensive lineman Quinterrius Eatmon shortly after Chandler’s and Mitchell’s, completing USF’s first recruiting class under Holtz with 15 signings Wednesday. Overall, the class includes 19 players, four already enrolled prior to National Signing Day.
So, what do you think of Holtz’s first class? What has you most excited? What is your biggest disappointment?
Let me know what you think. It will be interesting to see where the major recruiting services—Rivals and Scout—rank USF’s class compared to past classes.
Check back more in a little while from Holtz’s press conference here on campus at 5:30 p.m.

No disappointments.
Suggest removalSome nice steals but no major coups.
Filled the holes.
Like the future of the OL, QB, DBs, and RBs.
A-.
Great start of a bright future.
Holtz and company did well.
Looking forward to at least nine wins next year with some freshman making an immediate impact.

Very average class. It’s got a few elite athletes, but at the end of the day it will be in the high 40s / low 50s on both rivals and scouts.
It’s a small class, but I was still holding out hope for a few signing day surprises. Hans Louis and whelch were the days only real “surprises”, and they’re not really the kind of splash I was hoping for.
Middle of the pack class means middle of the pack grades. I’ll give Holtz a ‘C’. He’s did a good job of holding Leavitt’s class together (I feel Mitchell and Chandler would be Bulls even with Leavitt. Possibly even a few other big names that signed elsewhere, like Carnes and Sanders).
Holtz, will prove his recruiting ability next year at this time. Top 25 class or bust next year.

Pretty solid class, especially considering all of the recent turmoil.
Chandler and Mitchell are two of the highest rated that USF has ever landed. I like the focus on bringing more size to the offensive line. I also liked that they pulled offers from a couple of prospects with questionable academic records, it’s a positive sign for the future of the program.
Being a smaller class, I’d guess that rivals is going to give us a lower rank than last year. I think it’s slightly better. I’d give it a B+

Sounds decent to me, although the only things I know about any of these guys is what I read here. I was wondering who the highest rated high school players that USF signed in years past were. I’d like to know how they turned out as Bulls.

Hard to say at this point with Holtz just getting in and trying to salvage recruitment. I have high hopes that Holtz and staff will win a couple more games next year than what Leavitt could do. The next year’s class will be all on Holtz, so we’ll see how well he recruits next year. I’m very optimistic about next year and having Holtz as the HC and with past season’s redshirts coming on to play. Should be interesting and at least USF will have chance now to beat Rutgers and Cincy and maybe win a Thursday or Friday night game!

Like the way Holtz is settling the team and being able to assemble what appears to be a fantastic coaching staff and was able recruit all in a couple weeks time….just wow! A+

I agree with BullMartin that the class is about a “C”: some highs/lows; but, HOLTZ gets an “A”. I’d bump him up a grade for getting a decent class together on short notice, and bump him up another grade because of the notoriety and scandal going on while he had to do this. That means he gets an “A”. Don’t forget, a few weeks ago we were worried what firing the coach and the hitting scandal would do to recruiting - possibly that it would ruin the class. That didn’t happen, and Holtz may be a major reason why. Most of the staff who recruited these guys got fired before signing day, so NOTHING they said had any lasting weight with these recruits. And as DonG says, next year’s class is all on Holtz. This year he gets a bit of a pass.

Better than expected, I would say. The fact that he held on to Chandler and important O-linemen was key. He took some gambles with others and somehow turned T-Rex to come to USF…..all while starting the race with only 100 meters left.
I am excited to so how Gunsby pans out and to see Webster and T-Rex shut down the secondary.
Next year will be a better test…but then again if he wins where it ounts then who cares how we or anyone else ranks his classes.

Hey folks, thanks for chiming in with your thoughts on USF’s recruiting class. I’ll post my own grades later this afternoon…right now writing a hoops story…I’ve got to admit, I didn’t give Bulls much of a shot last night at Georgetown…team is really coming together at the right time.

Scott, no body outside of maybe the basketball team itself actually thought they would win. I thought it was possible if Georgetown came out flat, which they didn’t. What a great surprise we had last night.
Expectations are high for the games @ ND and @ Marquette now.

Scott…I see that some BE schools are making fball news with scheduling announcements (SU and BC) or getting specific game nights named such as, UC and NCSt. on Thursday night.
Is there any new scheduling tidbits yu can provide? Besides this upcoming year, I do not believe any of our schedules are complete which I find disturbing for a BCS school.
Thanks.

Hector, very good question. Scott, although it looks like next year’s schedule is set w/r/t non-conference games, but following years are missing many non-conference teams so far. Is there any news on that issue coming out from USF in the nearterm? While it’s nice to have the national exposure on Thursday or Friday nights (I’m personally against Friday nite college football), USF’s history shows it’s not usually a good result. Hopefully Holtz can change that around?

Hey guys, USF still working on finalizing future non-conference schedules. I know when Holtz was hired, that was an area they re-evaluated because of his preference to play a stronger non-conference schedule than the Bulls often do. At East Carolina, he only faced one I-AA team in five seasons I think; Big East schedule should be released soon for next season I’m told…stay tuned.
