Wharton do-everything junior Vernon Hargreaves, a first-team member of the Tampa Tribune’s all-Hillsborough county football squad last season as a defensive back, has received another scholarship offer this week, Wildcats coach David Mitchell said.
This time, the 6-foot, 180-pound Hargreaves landed an offer from the University of Virginia. He also owns pitches from Florida, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, South Florida and Virginia. Mitchell says most colleges are recruiting Hargreaves as a defensive back but the veteran coach believes his standout athletes can play just about anywhere.
“They (college coaches) are going to find out he can do a lot more than just play defensive back,” Mitchell said. “He’s just a multi-talented athlete. We asked him to do a lot for us last season and he did it all without complaining.”
That included playing quarterback when sophomore Chase Litton was forced out of the Sickles game with an injury. Hargreaves also play slot back, receiver and returned kicks.
