Wharton junior receiver Xavier Fisher suffered a broken neck during his team’s 49-0 loss to Armwood Friday, ending his season and possibly his football career.
Wharton coach David Mitchell said Fisher, a 6-foot, 170 pound receiver/defensive back, was hit hard in the back in the third or fourth quarter on a kick return, but walked off the field on his own cognisance. Once on the sidelines, Fisher said he felt soreness in his neck. After the game, he went to a hospital where it was discovered his neck had been broken in two places.
Mitchell said Fisher will spend the next three months in a halo. He was released from the hospital Monday.
“Everybody went to see him in the hospital to let him know we care about him,” Mitchell said. “He was the man.”
Mitchell said when Fisher learned he may never play football again, he broke down into tears. Mitchell said Fisher would have been a Division I prospect.
“There’s no doubt about it,” he said.
Mitchell said he wants to raise money to help pay for Fisher’s future college tuition.
