Wharton product London Enos, the Tampa Tribune’s Girls Track Athlete of the Year last season after winning her second straight state title in the pole vault, has signed a scholarship with the University of Central Florida, Wharton track and cross country coach Wes Newton said Thursday.

Enos is the third track athlete to sign with the Knights in recent years, following Wildcats middle distance standouts Kathia and Katrina Skinner. But since the twins recently left UCF’s track and cross country programs following some mixed performances, Newton says he holds some reservations about Enos competing there.

“London still has a tremendous amount of potential as a college athlete and it (UCF) could turn out to be the best thing for her,” Newton said. “I just hope she can get the coaching at UCF she needs to take it to that next level.”

Enos was Hillsborough County’s lone female to win a state track and field title last season, making it two straight gold medals in the state pole vault finals. She’s also marked the 10th consecutive year a Wharton athlete has won the Tribune’s Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year award. She was coached this season by a former winner of the award, Natalie Moser, who went on to earn all-American status at the University of Florida.
