CINCINNATI - A few hours before tonight’s USF at Cincinnati kickoff and it looks like temperatures will dip into the high 30s by the second half and even perhaps by kickoff. Wind also could be a factor. During this afternoon’s Carolina Panthers-Cincinnati Bengals NFL contest, the winds were strong enough that the Panthers had to have someone hold the ball on the tee for kickoffs. If the wind gusts don’t die down tonight, it could have an impact on the passing games of both teams.
While you can double Cincinnati’s temperature and still not reach the temperature in Tampa today, there are a few other differences between Tampa and Cincinnati. Driving in Cincinnati Saturday and scanning the AM radio dial I came across a play-by-play basketball broadcast - of a University of Kentucky men’s basketball scrimmage! Not only that, but the scrimmage drew a crowd of 4,551 on Saturday afternoon. By comparison, USF only had four bigger crowds in 14 regular season games last season.
The Cincinnati Enquirer also devoted an entire page on Sunday to coverage of college basketball for UK, Louisville and Cincinnati, complete with photos, while the USF-UC football advance consisted of only one story. We’re definitely not in Tampa. One last thing, is it too late to change my Pittsburgh-Rutgers pick? Are the Scarlet Knights that good or are the Panthers just not that good? I guess we’ll find out Nov. 4. Rutgers jumps up to No. 16 in the AP Poll, giving the Big East three top 16 teams.

To put it very simply, USF needs to become a better road team in order to become a real BIG EAST and National contender. Last year we lost a game to UCONN (a team that has no business beating us) and now this.

Claudel, I agree with you 100%. We need to become a more consistent team, especially on the road, if we are to compete for the BE crown and have hopes of being considered among the elite teams in the nation.
We will get there but for now our young team/program needs to get used to “showing up” every week, not looking ahead and creating an atmosphere where “6 wins” for a bowl is not the goal but rather the by-product of the bigger expecation a BE crown and a BCS slot.
Lets go BULLS! Beat PITT!

The game was an embarrassment. Very poor coaching, particularly on the offensive side. I’ve seen more imaginative play calling at high schools.

Even worse is that this terrible, embarrassing performance comes on national TV, with bascially a captive football audience. It was truly heartbreaking to watch this opportunity get squandered away. Seems like many of these big “opportunity games” get wasted…

I know these are only three comments, but based on your E-mails there aren’t a lot of happy campers in Bull nation today. Probably the most critical E-mail I received was from Fran Cathaml, who wrote: “The Cincinnati game demonstrates it is time to give Jim Leavitt his gold watch. He has taken the program from inception to BCS and for that will always be recognized with gratitude. However, it is evident he does not have what it take to coach at this level. The team is undisciplined with idiotic penalties in all facets of the game. The play calling is abysmal. Sad to say, if this team is to improve, it will have to be with a new coaching staff.” OK, Fran, tell us what you really think.

Not sure it’s time for Leavitt’s ouster, but the “Bull Nation” is getting somewhat tired of losing games we should win. Although upsets do happen, I felt we had the superior athletes on the field Sunday night and was quite embarrassed by the apparent lack of discipline(again) and the coaching. Was the fake punt call early in the 4th absurd, or was it just me?

We need to pursue Charlie Strong..Hes looking for coaching opportunity..Better Coach, better recruiter, and has the ability to make the Bulls a big time winner…Lets pitch in and buy Jim L. his season tickets for the next 40 years and call it a day.

I don’t think we should get rid of CJL but some areas do concern me.
1. Discpline, why do our kids have such a hard time with the penalty issue?
2. Motivation, why is it that we can show up to play against RU, UConn, KU and UCF but McNeese, FIU and Cincy USF takes for granted? And this is a yearly issue….last year UofL and UConn are prime examples of coming in strong one week and flat the next.
3. Play-calling, Brett do you know if CJL has EVER overruled his OC, I can’t recall a situtation when he has. It always seems like he is having to answer the question and support a decision. Example, UConn “Voodoo 5” and Cincy Ben Williams safety….why not run the pass play they ran later on to get out of that situation!

Hector, rarely does a head coach overrule an OC - you just don’t have enough time unless you call a time out. As far as the safety at Cincinnati, it wouldn’t have mattered if Barry Sanders was the running back, the offensive line got blown off the ball and Williams had no chance. The only play that would have not resulted in a safety would have been a QB sneak.
