With the Rays’ victory today and Baltimore’s loss to the White Sox, the Rays are now tied with the Orioles for first place in the American League East. At 14-11, the Rays and Os are percentage points ahead of the Red Sox (15-12).
This is the latest the Rays have ever held a share of first place, with the next-closest encounter coming April 16, 2004, when they were 5-4.
Other numbers of note:
* This is the Rays’ first-ever sweep of Boston in a series of at least three games.
* The 7-2 homestand is the Rays’ second-best ever involving three or more teams—they went 8-2 against the Orioles, Red Sox and Royals in July 2005.
* The Rays’ six-game winning streak is their longest since taking six in a row from July 28-Aug. 3, 2005.
“It’s a great feeling, it’s a great moment,” said Joe Maddon. “It’s very early in the season but we need to prove to ourselves that we can do these kind of things. You always talk about it, you think you can, but until you actually do, you don’t know that you can.”

I could not have been happier sitting at the Trop watching Boston fans go home disappointed three games in a row. The only problem is that these fans are going home to Hillsborough or Pinellas County and not Massachusetts. C’mon folks let your past go and root for the home team. If Boston was so great why are you living here?

I think a lot of these Boston/NY fans will change, the same way the changes happened with the Bucs and Lightning. Now that the Rays are going to show a consistent winning product, there will be more people getting on the bandwagon. And all of a sudden, when you get 25-30k Rays fans at the Trop every night, it’s not such a bad ballpark.

i am moving back to tampa soon and as the sox have won two championships you’ll have to forgive the loyalty factor but there’s nothing like a winning product and a packed house to get a solid tradition working here, esp. when a new stadium becomes a reality…... but could we chill on the cowbells. they are annoying when rung the entire game for every situation.I bet the rays players would agree.

I couldn’t be more excited for Rays fans. I think this is going to be a great year for you. I have been a loyal O’s fan for a long time, and my day will come. It’s great to see the Yanks and Sox looking UP.
