On the final weekend before National Signing Day, USF is hosting a couple of surprise visitors among the seven players taking their official visits.
Williston WR Deonte Welch, the Gainesville Sun’s 2009 Player of the Year and an Arkansas commit, is scheduled to visit today. Also, Miami Northwestern DT Todd Chandler, a player the Bulls covet, is also in town.
Chandler had scheduled a visit to South Carolina this weekend, but changed his plans and is touring USF according to Scout.com’s USF site. He has verbally committed to USF but wavered in his pledge recently after taking a trip to Louisville once former UF assistant Charlie Strong took over the program.
As for Welch, he is a player USF started recruiting heavily once Holtz took over the program on Jan. 14. He scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added four assists for the Williston basketball team Friday night in a victory over Alachua Sante Fe.
He would be a nice addition to Holtz’s 2010 class if the Bulls can change his mind. A 6-foot-1 RB/WR in high school, Welch is expected to play receiver in college and could help USF fill the void when target recruit Ace Sanders of Bradenton Manatee committed to South Carolina earlier this week.
The other players taking official visits: DB/WR Rashard Cliett of Thomas County (Ga.) Central; DB Devont’a Davis of Gainesville High; QB Jamius Gunsby of LaGrange (Ga.) High; and RB Tiger Powell and WR Jamaal Montague of Lake City Columbia.

Scott, it appears that even though Skip Holtz just arrived at USF, he has the ability to attract the interest of high level HS recruits. I’m looking forward to Wednesday to see how USF’s recruiting went. Very good article by Nick Williams in today’s Tribune re: state of Florida having no football programs in Div II or Div 1A. If you can post that article here, I think it would have a lot of interest by USF fans/bloggers. Would be great if Florida had a couple or three Div II programs that could feed USF with players that just needed more time to develop and that wanted to remain in the state.
