TAMPA – Derrick Ward had one goal in mind when the free-agency signing period began last weekend – get to Tampa.

“I told my agent when this first started, just get me to Tampa,’’ Ward said Tuesday after signing the four-year contract that made him a Buccaneer. “I just feel this is the right fit for me.’’

The Bucs obviously feel Ward is a good fit. The deal they signed him to is worth $17 million overall, including $3 million in guarantees and a $3 million salary.

For that they’re getting a player has no qualms running in a tandem with projected starting running back Earnest Graham. In fact, Ward sounds like he’s anxious to run with Graham.

“We’re going to turns some head this year,’’ he said.

Ward helped turn heads the last two years as a member of the Giants “Earth Wind and Fire backfield. With Graham and “hopefully Caddillac Williams,’’ Ward said, the Bucs will have the “new edition of the Earth Wind and Fire backfield.’’

Here is hoping he’s right.  You can have a great offensive line and talented running backs, but without a viable passing attack they’ll just stack the box.  I just don’t have a ton of confidence in the QB’s or WR’s (other than Bryant and now Winslow) we have at the moment.  If they were so great there would be decent interest from other teams for their services.  I’d love another WR at least and finish fixing up the holes on defense.  Finally seems like the front office started to wake up a little.

Now…if we could just address the defensive side of the ball. Keeping the D off the field will help rest them but if they are forever getting scored on while on the field it won’t matter.

Chris,

Winslow wasn’t a FA. So other teams had no clue. We traded for him. I would like for us to pick up Laverneous Cloes though. And get a deal done for a QB Cutler would be nice but we will see. I don’t see why nobody is talking about DT Tank Johnson.

Surprisingly, a couple of teams were interested in Clayton.  I agree we need to add a WR.  The only decent one left that I know of other than Coles is Henderson.  Someone said the draft is deep with WRs.  I’m not so sure.  If Bey is in the top 5 according to most and he has issues with his hands, that’s not too comforting.  I want him or Henderson just to maintain that deep threat.  With McCown, Johnson, Leftwich or possibly even Cutler playing QB, we’ll need some speed.  Everyone of them can probably toss the ball at least 20 more yards than Garcia could.

I didn’t even think about Tank.  He is the only DT who would easily fit into our scheme.  Igor Olshansky or whatever is the only other good one I know of, but he’s been in a 3-4.  The longer they ignore our most glaring need, the more I think it will be filled with our 1st rounder.  Other than Haynesworth, they haven’t pursued any DTs.  The problem with using the draft is that the top 2-Raji and Jerry-could possibly be gone when we pick.

Todd, no way are the Broncos gonna give up Cutler. Who would they replace him with, Darell Hackney? Or is anybody in the draft equal to Cutler? Who would we trade at qb with a pick for Cutler, Griese? The supposed trade we were involved with would have given Broncos Matt Cassel.

I wonder what Graham thinks about his 3 yr 10.5 mill contract, after Ward’s 4 yr 17 mill contract? Their careers are almost identical. Ward 7th rnd pick and Graham undrafted fa. Neither played much the first 3 years. Ward has almost 100 more total rushing yards(1750 yds to 1676 yds) but Graham has 9 more tds than Ward(14 tds to 5 tds).

Cutler is not going to be traded.

One must still wonder though…why didn’t the Bucs trade their 2nd round pick for Cassell?

Anyone notice there has been no interest in Dunn, June, Hilliard, Brooks or Galloway? Maybe theye knew what they were doing…..Give them a chance. Glad to see Ward brought in. With Graham, Smith and eventually Caddy we a have a strong stable of backs.  There will still be guys cut, free agents available and the draft. We will make improvements elsewhere.

Hey soflobucsfan. We all understand why management let Brooks,Dunn,etc.. We are upset at the CLASSLESS way the Bucs released D. Brooks. Remember John Lynch? These guys are EXCEPTIONS to the rule. These were the high character people you want in your community not just on your sports team. Retail stores help people with medical bills, funerals, disasters, etc. by collecting money or goods. That’s just GOOD business.

Have to agree with most posts; sign Tank Johnson, he is the run stopper we NEED!
