Wayne Ward has officially been named the new head football coach at Plant City.

Ward, a Plant City alum, takes over for Jason Strunk, who resigned after two seasons to take a job on the staff at Purdue University. It is Ward’s first head coaching job.

“I’ll tell you I’m really excited right now for the opportunity,” said Ward, 31, who has served as the interim head coach since Strunk stepped down two weeks ago. “I’m ready to get after it and go out and have some fun.”

Ward has been an assistant at Plant City 2002, holding titles as running backs coach and offensive coordinator, among others. He was Strunk’s right-hand man the past two seasons, during which time he believes he made big strides in learning what it takes to be a head coach.

“These last two years have really been awesome,” he said. “I could really get an understanding on how to really run a program because me and Strunk were the main two guys running the show.”
