Volleyball: Plant headed to Chicago; Bayshore Christian hosts invite

Some of Hillsborough County’s top volleyball programs will be competing in tournaments this weekend.

Nationally-ranked Plant will travel to Chicago for the Asics Challenge, formerly known as the Nike Challenge. Last year, Plant went 4-1 to finish fifth in the 24-team national tournament.

Plant is in the same pool as host Mother McAuley and Illinois powerhouse Hononegah. The tournament includes several nationally-ranked programs, four of which are ranked in ESPN’s Fab 50 top 10.

Bayshore Christian is hosting an invitational this weekend that will include local teams Freedom, Gaither and Wharton. Bayshore finished second in the tournament last year.

Here is the bracket for the tournament.

Friday: Windermere Prep vs. Freedom, 4 p.m.; Seven Rivers vs. St. John’s Lutheran, 5 p.m.; Seacrest Country Day vs. Wharton, 6 p.m.; Gaither vs. Bayshore Christian, 7 p.m.

Saturday: Windermere/Freedom winner vs. Seven Rivers/St. John’s winner, 11 a.m.; Seacrest/Wharton winner vs. Gaither/Bayshore winner, Noon. Seventh place match, 1 p.m.; Fifth place, 2 p.m.; Third place, 3:30 p.m.; Championship 4 p.m.
