LITHIA First-year Newsome volleyball coach Kate Correa was unsure how her team would respond to a resurging Riverview squad on Thursday, who entered the match with an overall record of 5-2 and 2-0 in district play.
The Wolves (7-1, 3-0) put her worries at ease, playing solid defense and using timely kills to defeat Riverview, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19, in a Class 5A-District 8 match.
“That was the best game we’ve played all year, defensively,” Correa said. “It was definitely a team effort. It’s good for me to know that at this point of the season we’re moving forward instead of backward.”
Senior middle hitter Hillary Byrd, who missed the last two weeks with an injured thumb, was Newsome’s defensive spark, pulling in double digit digs, a few blocks and five kills. Senior outside hitter Lauren Zellmer added five aces and seven kills.
