Plant senior outside hitter Maddie Martin was passed over for Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Volleyball, but was honored by Gatorade as the best player in the state of Florida when the company named her Florida’s Girls Volleyball Player of the Year on Wednesday, Plant coach Leanna Taylor said.
Martin led Plant to its first Class 6A state title this season and fourth consecutive state title with 390 kills.
Martin was named Class 6A Player of the Year by Dairy Farmers and finished second in voting for Miss Volleyball. She has signed to play for Penn State. She is the third Plant volleyball player to be honored by Gatorade. In 2007, former setter Kellie Catanach won the award and former hitter Sarah Kirkwood won it in 2004. Martin is now a finalist for National Gatorade Player of the Year.
On Sunday, Martin will play in the Under-Armour All-American game at the Forum.
