Volleyball: Burgess will play for Team USA

Berkeley Prep sophomore outside hitter Jordan Burgess will be one of 12 players across the country on the 2010 18-Under USA Girls’ Youth National Volleyball Team to compete in the NORCECA Continental Championships in Guatemala April 3-10.

Burgess, a 5-foot-11 hitter, led Berkeley Prep to the Class 3A state title this past season with 363 kills and 385 digs and was later named 3A Player of the Year by Florida Dairy Farmers. Burgess was also named to the Tribune’s All-Hillsborough Volleyball First-Team.

The U.S. Girls Youth National Training Team members were training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

“I am pleased by the level of effort given by all the players,” USA coach Jim Stone said. “The attitude of the players was great, and they all tried hard. Now the challenge for the players is to take the information they received this weekend and continue to improve. We will not have any training prior to traveling to Guatemala, so we have to improve in the coming three months on an individual basis.”
