Florida A&M return specialist LeRoy Vann, a Blake High product, found is way into the record books Saturday.
Vann, a senior, had a 51-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter of the Rattlers’ 31-27 victory over North Carolina A&T, and it was a big one.
The return was his fifth of the season and eighth of his career, which tied NCAA single season and career marks. He also set a Football Championship Subdivision record for career returns, and tied a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference single-season record.
Vann set two new FAMU records in the process as well. His fifth return this season broke Howard Huckaby’s record of four set during the 1988 season, and Vann’s 81 punt return yards Saturday raised his season total to 540, breaking Huckaby’s record of 478 yards also set in 1988.
Vann has been one of college football’s top return men over the past two seasons. In 2008, Vann was an FCS first-team All-American.
