Vancouver rallies from a halftime deficit for victory as the standings in the USSF Division II tighten after Saturday night’s action.
VANCOUVER 2, AUSTIN 1: The Whitecaps earned their first road win of the season as second-half goals by Marcus Haber and Nizar Khalfan gave them victory against the Aztex, their first ever in Austin.
Austin had taken the lead just before halftime, Lawrence Olum capping a good half for the Aztex with his goal in stoppage time. Haber, though, got the Whitecaps on level terms midway through the second half with his first goal of the season. Khaifan, who entered the game in the 67th minute, then found a winning with nine minutes to go, keeping Vancouver on top of the NASL Conference and reducing Austin’s lead at the overall top of the league.
ROCHESTER 2, BALTIMORE 1: The Rhinos moved into a tie with the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies on 18 points with a victory against Crystal Palace Baltimore, their second in the last three games.
Isaac Kissi just before and just after halftime, his first two goals of the season, first scoring on a turning shot from inside the area before beating Evan Bush one-on-one in the 50th minute. The Eagles pulled a goal back through Randi Patterson in the 70th minute and had a chance to equalize in stoppage time, but Rhinos goalkeeper Scott Vallow saved Adeto Neto’s shot from the top of the penalty area.
MIAMI 1, PORTLAND 0: Kyle Veris’ first-half goal gave the Blues victory, moving them into third place in the NASL Conference as the Timbers winless streak continued.
Portland hasn’t won in league play since April 21, and was sent to its fourth defeat in a seven-game winless streak by Veris’ 26th-minute header that proved to be the only goal of the game. The Blues are now equal on points with the Timbers, and back in the hunt for a playoff berth.
ST. LOUIS 1, PUERTO RICO 0: The most remarkable result of the weekend saw St. Louis take just its second win of the season at the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel, keeping the Islanders rooted to the bottom of the USL Conference.
Brad Stisser got the only goal of the game in the 36th minute and it was enough for the first road victory in franchise history thanks to goalkeeper Alex Dufty, who made a pair of key saves in the second half for his second shutout of the season.
