Portland capitalized on two mistakes by Vancouver to earn a 2-1 victory on Thursday night and move into fourth place in the USSF Division II standings.
PORTLAND 2, VANCOUVER 1: Goals by Ryan Pore, his league-leading 11th of the season, and Mamadou Danso gave the Timbers victory and handed the Whitecaps their first loss at Swangard Stadium this season.
Vancouver had been on top in the first half, and took the lead early in the second when Nizar Khalfan scored his second goal of the season in the 51st minute. But the game turned in the 66th minute, when Pore was judged to have been pulled down in the penalty area by Greg Janicki on a breakaway, earning the Whitecaps defender a red card.
Pore capitalized from the spot, and then saw his side take the lead six minutes later as Whitecaps goalkeeper Jay Nolly misjudged a ball into the penalty area and Danso was on hand to finish. The victory was Portland’s first in Vancouver since May 2004 and earned their victory in The Cascadia Cup for this season.
