Vancouver took an early lead, but Puerto Rico rebounded to pick up a point in the USSF Division II on Wednesday night.
VANCOUVER 1, PUERTO RICO 1: The Whitecaps extended their undefeated streak to four games, but might consider themselves unlucky not to have come away with all three points against the Islanders.
Ansu Toure gave the Whitecaps the lead in the 10th minute with a fine header, but the Islanders hit back in the 36th minute as David Foley finished from Josh Hansen’s pass to send the sides to the break even.
Vancouver appeared the more likely side to take the lead after the break, coming closest when Johnny Steele hit the post off a free kick by Martin Nash. The Whitecaps will likely be happy with a point, though, as they extended their lead at the top of the NASL Conference while Puerto Rico remained rooted to the bottom of the USL Conference.
THURSDAY’S GAME
MINNESOTA (4-7-2) AT PORTLAND (3-4-4): While they have played two more games, it’s Minnesota that is surprisingly above Portland currently in the USL standings after the Timbers have gone through a major slump through May and June.
In fact, the Timbers haven’t won a game in the league since April 29 against Vancouver and saw their winless streak reach seven games when they fell in Miami on Saturday. Tonight’s game is the first of a home-and-home set with the Stars hosting the Timbers on Saturday night. Both teams are coming off wins in the U.S. Open Cup, but the Stars have had better form of late, picking up seven of the last nine available points including a 1-0 victory against Montreal last Wednesday in their last outing.
