USF senior safety Jerrell Young on Monday was named the Big East Conference’s defensive player of the week following his performance in Saturday’s season-opening win at No. 16 Notre Dame.
Young had his hand in two turnovers in the 23-20 victory over the Fighting Irish. He caused a fumble on the Irish’s opening offensvie series, which cornerback Kayvon Webster returned for a touchdown. He added an interception late in the fourth quarter on the first play following the second weather-related delay of the game. He also finished with seven tackles.
In addition, USF junior kicker Maikon Bonani was recognized on the conference honor roll. Bonani made three of four field goal attempts against the Irish, including a career long-tying 49 yarder.
