USF’s Search Has Begun; School Has Hired Neinas Sports Services to Assist

Posted Jan 9, 2010 by Scott Carter

Updated Jan 9, 2010 at 05:50 PM

USF athletic director Doug Woolard says the school has hired consulting firm Neinas Sports Services to help in the search for Jim Leavitt’s replacement.

Woolard and USF athletic department officials Lee Roy Selmon and Bill McGillis will lead the in-house interviews, communicating regularly with USF president Judy Genshaft throughout the process.

Woolard hasn’t put a timetable on the search, adding that “we are going to do it as quickly as possible and as thorough as necessary.’‘

As for potential candidates, Woolard said the school wants to develop a “diverse pool’’ and that head coaches and assistants at the college or NFL level will be considered.

I’m sure he means former head coaches at colleges, too, but you never know with this group - look at the stellar job these clowns did with US basketball. What did THAT take, 2 duds before the current hire? And the clock is running on him.

Scott if they hired this firm, then that means a contract and that’s a public document that would lay out the parameters of what salary range we want to stay within, etc. Any chance a Freedom of information act request or a public records request will give us a look at it and see what we’re in for?

Who do you think we really have a chance at? And people, please, don’t say Dungy or Gruden - they cost $5 mil+ annually, and we ain’t paying that!

Dan,

You’re right, the next coach at USF won’t make $4 or $5 million ... It’s safe to rule Dungy and Gruden ‘‘never in’’ rather than “out’’ at this point…I’ve always thought Dungy would make a great college coach because he truly does “mentor’’ kids, but he recently told Trib he had no desire to get back into coaching in near future.

As for Neinas, I remember requesting contract FSU had with that agency during its search for new AD in late 2007/early 2008…they are basically an information gathering and consulting firm…seems FSU paid them around $50,000 for service…as for terms of salary of potential hire, that wasn’t on the FSU contract with Neinas, but I’ll check down road when documents become public.

Stay warm!

I was afraid of that. okay, what about this; can we look into how long it too Minas to work some of their prior deals, lime with UF when they found Meyer? then we might have an idea of how long this would take.

Also, like UF, Zook was punted from the program after the season, and I guess Minas was then hired to do the search. Zook had recruited a lot of guys to UF. What was the fallout? Did most of the recruited /committed recruits still go to UF?

I guess I’m looking for info to see a comparison of how long this will take and what the fallout will be. Any ideas?

Scott,

Any interest on Mike Shula?  He has HC experience in the SEC, has strong ties to FL, knows what needs to be done for players to get to the next level, and lastly has a last name that recruits in FL (especially S. FL) can trust.

Don’t know who the coach will be but Fennelly is right…..Orlando is full of potential candidates and Woolard will be extra reason many will gather for.

I really expect the search to be over fairly quickly, and yes, the AFCA convention going on in Orlando right now is like a SuperTarget during Christmas…one-stop shopping and you’re done.

You can bet Woolard will be over there where all the hot candidates will be the next few days.

As for Mike Shula, I have not heard his name…not sure how attractive a candidate he is at this point…you can go a lot of different ways with this hot: veteran who had won big, hot-shot on the way up, or highly regarded NFL/college coordinator/assistant…

The hire needs to make a splash and get fans/boosters excited, and not sure Shula does that

Mike Shula does NOT do that. He was HATED here when he worked for the Bucs, and those people that hated him then are still around. Oh, please, don’t do that to us!

Do you expect this to last a week, a month, 2 months? I know you don’t know how long it WILL last, but how many weeks SHOULD it last? I think if it goes more than 2 weeks, we’re goners. Wasn’t Texas Tech about 2 weeks?

BTW, I didn’t hate Shula. But in those days, WOW was he hated here.

I hear Phil Fulmer is in Orlando sniffing around for opportunities. Since Tuberville is off the table, that’s who I’d most like to land, after all, he’s already proven that he can win a National Championship.

Didn’t Fulmer recently go after the Louisville job? That position is lower paying than Leavitts salary, and I would think most perceive as less desirable than USF.

I’ll really be surprised if USF doesn’t have a new head coach by the end of the week. This is a perfect marriage of circumstances: an up-and-coming program, Florida recruiting base, get to live in sunny Tampa, and oh by the way, nearly every major college coach and assistant is an hour away this week at a national coaching convention!

Fulmer definitely has the itch to get back onto the sideline and he is probably the most high-profile former college coach on the market right now, winning big at Tennessee in the SEC, winning a national title, etc. Just not sure how much interest USF has at the moment.

I’d be shocked if they don’t at least talk though.

Why would USf NOT be interested in Fulmer? Most Tennessee alums I know wish for the good old days when he was their coach. A Championship, and usually a contender, and a big name. Plus, what did he ever do there except win and get fat? I would take him if Tuberville’s gone now. TT would have been my top pick. Don’t forget - Leavitt had a finger in every pie, and a good coach knows how to delegate. I want a been there done it before guy for a few years, not a guy who needs to learn it all.

I wonder of we could get those crazy green and gold kids to drive over to O-town and hold a rally for Fulmer, complete with signs that say something like “Tampa Loves Fulmer or anyone else with a good track record who is available” or “Coach Needed, inquire within”

If we had a rally for a few names we like, how could the administration NOT consider them? Alumni vote with their feet and wallets… a rally could sway things.

Wait til it warms up, though. I mean, let’s not get crazy here

I agree, Fulmer would be great….the exact opposite of CJL.  A proven (consistent) winner and calm….you’d never know if he were winning or losing.

My top pick right know though is Jagz, only thing that worries me about him is that he may be a “flight risk.”  Also, the more I read about the Titans QB coach the more I like him.  However, he, I think, would need help recruiting.

Please GOD, no fired Buccaneers coaches! Please, please, please! One loss and the crowd (media, fans, etc) will be against them forever. NO FORMER BUCS COACHES!!!
