USF’s Pro Day pushed back; where will these guys get drafted?

This year’s NFL Draft is shaping up to be one that USF football fans will keep a close eye on.

The Bulls have several strong NFL prospects and DE Jason Pierre-Paul is one of the best stories in the draft considering how far he has come so fast in the eyes of NFL scouts.

USF announced Thursday that its Pro Day—an open workout for players in front of NFL scouts and coaches—has been pushed back from March 3 to March 30.

Pierre-Paul, George Selvie, Jerome Murphy, Carlton Mitchell, Matt Grothe, Kion Wilson and Nate Allen are all expected to participate.

Based on several mock drafts, Pierre-Paul appears a lock to be picked high in the first round. Mike Jenkins is USF’s highest-drafted player, going to the Cowboys at No. 25 overall a couple of years ago. Pierre-Paul should go no lower than 15th based on mock drafts, but things often change on draft day, so you never know.

Here is my little mock draft on USF players: Pierre-Paul (early 1st round), Nate Allen (late 2nd round, early 3rd round), George Selvie (late 3rd, early 4th), Wilson (late 6th round), Murphy (7th round, undrafted). I don’t see Mitchell getting drafted unless he blows away scouts at the NFL Combine, and Grothe is hoping to hook on with a team as a free-agent coming off major knee surgery.

Still, the fact we’re talking about five USF defensive players with a chance to get drafted is impressive.

We’ll see. There are always surprises on draft day, that’s why it has grown into such a popular TV event.

What do you think? Am I way off on any of these players?

I think your projections look pretty good.  I’d be surprised to see Nate Allen go in the second round, but 3rd seems right.  If anyone picks Jerome Murphy it will be the Lions—oh wait, Matt Millen is back on tv now.  I think Murphy will go undrafted.  Someone is going to get a solid player with a long pro career with Selvie.  I think it will take him a year or two, but he will become a starter for someone.

How about the steal that the Cowboys got with Mike Jenkins at #25?!  He had a dominant year this season.

Scott, do you think Carlton Mitchell left because he was upset about CJL getting fired, or for some other reason?

I agree about Selvie; I can see him really getting better as time passes and he puts on weight and being a solid pro.

As for Mitchell’s decision to leave, I was told the coaching change made it easier for him to leave since he wasn’t sure what kind of offense Holtz would install, his role, etc. I haven’t spoken directly to him though.

Personally, not sure it was the best decision for him since I don’t see him as one of the highest-rated receivers in the draft. But, one great day at a combine can change the scouts’ view of a player, so we’ll see. USF could have certainly used him next season.
