Some bad news on the injury front for USF, with coach Skip Holtz announcing Tuesday morning that further x-rays on Sterling Griffin’s injured right ankle revealed a fracture and the sophomore receiver will be sidelined 6-8 weeks.
Also, sophomore cornerback Ricardo Dixon has torn the ACL in his right knee, which will sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Both players were injured during Saturday’s 37-34 loss to Cincinnati at Raymond James Stadium. Griffin was hurt while trying to make a catch in the third quarter, while Dixon was hurt in the fourth quarter while trying to defend a pass.
The loss of Griffin, who missed all of 2010 after breaking his right ankle in offseason drills the previous summer, is a big blow for the USF offense. He led the team in both receptions (40) and receiving yards (493) through the first seven games and was tied for the team lead with two touchdown receptions. The next-best receiver for the Bulls statistically is junior Victor Marc, who has 18 catches for 205 yards on the year.
Dixon, a reserve, had appeared in six games, making two tackles and one interception.

Is it safe to say that Sterling’s injury is not as serious as the ankle injury he had last season?

Isn’t as severe as it won’t require surgery, but still a tough break for a young man who was on pace for the best statistical season for a receiver in program history.
