USF coach Skip Holtz was still awaiting the results for more extensive x-rays on Sterling Griffin’s injured right ankle, but Monday afternoon on the Big East coaches’ teleconference Holtz said the best-case scenario for Griffin would be that he would miss a couple of weeks.
“He definitely has an ankle sprain. One of the concerns about it is about maybe a break in the bone,” Holtz said. “I would say in a best-case scenario that he would be out a couple of weeks, a worst-case scenario there would be a break and he would probably be out for the rest of the year. But with his ankle, right now he’s very doubtful for the upcomig game (Nov. 5 at Rutgers).”
Griffin was injured while trying to make a catch in the third quarter of Saturday’s 37-34 loss to Cincinnati. The ankle is the same one he broke during summer workouts in 2010 that cost him all of last season.
Griffin was on pace for the best season statistically for a USF receiver in program history, with 40 receptions for 483 yards and two touchdowns through the team’s first seven games. Prior to the injury against the Bearcats, he had eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.
“It’s going to be hard (to lose him),” Holtz said. “He’s really been playing well. ... I absolutely hate if for Sterling with everything he’s been through with the ankle a year ago where he missed the entire season, and he’s just come back so strong and he’s such a great young man and has worked so hard to be here and made such a huge impact on this team this season. It would be difficult to lose him and it definitely looks like that’s going to be the case, at least for a couple of weeks.”
