The University of South Florida women’s basketball team’s trip to the Big East Tournament was a short stay.
The No. 11-seed Bulls (15-15) were upset 63-51 on Friday night by No. 14-seed Cincinnati (12-17).
The Bearcats used an 11-0 run in the second half and the overwhelming support of the crowd at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn., to send the Bulls home.
Cincinnati coach Jamelle Elliott is a former Connecticut player and assistant coach, hence the crowd support from the more than 8,000 fans at UConn’s home arena.
Despite the loss, defending WNIT champion USF is likely headed to a sixth WNIT appearance in the last seven years.
Freshman G KaNeisha Saunders scored a team-high 14 points, but turnovers and poor rebounding cost USF a chance to move on.
