Starting things off with a few links to the Tampa Tribune’s USF football season preview, which appeared in Sunday’s paper.
The Bulls hope 2011 is a special season and have their eyes on the program’s first Big East Conference title, and five things to watch with the team.
Also, Tribune columnist Martin Fennelly writes this season offers USF a unique opportunity, and it’s time for a Bulls breakthrough in the Big East.
And, more football from Sunday night. USF coach Skip Holtz gave his team an extra day off, and the coach also announced four true freshmen will definitely play this season: WRs Andre Davis and Ruben Gonzalez, DT Elkino Watson, and walk-on P Mattias Ciabatti, who will battle junior Justin Brockhaus-Kann this week for the starting job in Saturday’s season opener at Notre Dame.
—-The men’s soccer team earned a win in its season opener Saturday, knocking off Wake Forest, 2-0, on the road. Dom Dwyer scored the Bulls first goal, and new goalkeeper Chris Blais made seven saves. USF (1-0) has its next two games at home: Friday against Georgia State and Sunday against Robert Morris.
—-After earning a 2-1 win against Indiana in the first game at Corbett Soccer Stadium on Friday, the USF women’s soccer team improved to 2-0 in its new venue Sunday with a 9-0 rout of visiting Alabama A&M. The Bulls got goals from nine different players, with Noelle Pineiro scoring one and adding three assists to lead the onslaught. USF (2-1) hosts the Dafeldecker Classic this week, with games Friday against Vanderbilt and Sunday against Murray State.
—-The women’s volleyball team dropped both of its games on the season’s opening weekend, losing to New Mexico (3-1) and New Mexico State (3-0) at the New Mexico Invite. The Bulls host the USF Invitational this weekend at the campus recreation center, which will serve as the team’s home this season as the Sun Dome and Corral undergo renovations.
