Here is a quick look at how USF’s athletics squads fared over the weekend:
MEN’S SOCCER: Midfielder Bernardo Anor was named the MVP of the Embassy Suites Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers after netting the game-winning goals in each of the Bulls’ wins at the tournament, against No. 9 Ohio State on Thursday and Drexel on Saturday. In addition to Anor being honored, Hasani Sinclair, Aubrey Perry and Leston Paul were named to the all-tournament team.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Taylor Patterson scored her first goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulls dropped their Big East Conference opener Friday against Marquette, 2-1. USF (5-2-1) returns to action Thursday at home against Pittsburgh.
CROSS COUNTRY: The women’s team had a strong showing in its first meet of the season, taking third at the 22nd annual Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville. Junior Nicole Rozario led the way, placing third individually after completing the 5 kilometer course in a personal best time of 17 minutes, 37.27 seconds.
The men’s squad finished eighth at the same meet. Senior Pedro Carela was the Bulls’ top finisher in the 8 kilometer race, placing 14th in a personal-best 25:46.29.
VOLLEYBALL: The Bulls finished 1-2 at the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament they hosted, winning their final match Saturday against Jacksonville after falling to New Mexico and Florida Atlantic in their first two matches. Sophomore libero Janice Rivera was named to the all-tournament team for USF (4-7), which opens Big East Conference play Friday at home against Marquette.
MEN’S TENNIS: Junior Yannick Yoshizawa led the way for the Bulls at their first meet of the season, the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, going 4-0 in singles matches over the weekend, including posting the team’s lone win against the Gators.
