USF coach Skip Holtz released the Bulls fall depth chart Monday evening, but there weren’t many surprises. Here are some observations:
—-Perhaps the most noticeable thing is sophomore safety JaQuez Jenkins now listed as the second-team cornerback behind Quenton Washington. Holtz had said backup cornerback was still a position of concern, and Bulls coaches have confidence in Jenkins, who had already locked up the fifth defensive back spot in the nickel package.
Jenkins played corner in high school and said recently he’s comfortable working there. Junior walk-on Ernie Tabuteau was the backup at the other corner position behind Kayvon Webster, and fifth-year senior Tyson Butler is now listed as the top backup to junior Jon Lejiste at strong safety in place of Jenkins.
—-Two players who were listed as starters coming out of the spring, receiver Terrence Mitchell and punter Chris Veron, are no longer listed on the two-deep at their respective positions. Mitchell still appears on the chart, though, at punt returner.
—-Sixth-year senior AJ Love and redshirt sophomore Sterling Griffin, both of whom missed last season with injuries, used strong preseason camps to lock down the first-team spots at wide receiver.
—-Junior Evan Landi, the team’s leading returning pass catcher from 2010 who made the move to tight end in fall camp, is now in the first-team spot there ahead of redshirt junior Andreas Shields, who was listed with the first team after spring practice.
—-Redshirt freshman Reshard Cliett is listed on the first team at SAM linebacker, ahead of senior Curtis Weatherspoon. Junior Sam Barrington, who said last week that defensive coordinator Mark Snyder informed him he would open at SAM at Notre Dame, is listed at first team at MIKE.
—-Two true freshmen made their way onto the depth chart: defensive tackle Elkino Watson, listed as the top backup to redshirt junior Cory Grissom, and punter Mattias Ciabatti, listed behind with junior Justin Brockhaus-Kann (though Holtz said Sunday Ciabatti and Brockhaus-Kann would compete this week for the starting job in Saturday’s opener at Notre Dame).
—-The second-team offensive line doesn’t include true freshman Darrell Williams, who took plenty of reps with the unit at left tackle. Holtz said Sunday night that Williams is a player who could see the field this season but he’s among a group of newcomers coaches are still trying to decide whether it’s worth it to burn a potential redshirt year. Fifth-year senior Darren Powe is listed as the top backup to redshirt junior Mark Popek there.
Here is USF’s complete two-deep depth chart (starters listed first):
