The University of South Florida will honor the memory of former RB Keeley Dorsey, who died after a conditioning workout in January 2007, throughout the upcoming season.
Each game, a different senior player will wear a No. 10 jersey (Dorsey’s old number). Senior defensive lineman Aaron Harris will wear it for Saturday’s opener against Wofford.
“[Keeley] was a tremendous young man and a very good football player,” USF coach Jim Leavitt said. “I have great respect for our players who came to me and wanted to honor him and wear his number. And I think it’s appropriate we do that.”
This would have been Dorsey’s senior season.
CLASS ACT: Senior DE George Selvie is among 30 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The award is based on achievements in character, classroom, community and competition. Selvie is one of two Big East players nominated. The group will be narrowed to 10 finalists during the season.
LOGJAM: There are four players – David Bedford, Craig Marshall, Jason Pierre-Paul and Ryne Giddins – vying for the starting defensive end spot opposite Selvie.
“That thing’s getting battled out still,” Leavitt said. “I think that’s still a question mark. Bedford probably is in a position to start only because he has had such a great camp and been so steady.”
ODDS AND ENDS: Leavitt reiterated that freshman QB B.J. Daniels will play against Wofford and get additional playing time during the season. “B.J.’s gonna play [Saturday]. He’s gonna play a bunch this year,” Leavitt said. … RT Mark Popek missed his second straight day because of the flu, but will be ready to play Saturday, Leavitt said.
