USF target Ace Sanders commits to South Carolina; Chandler Next?

Bradenton Manatee WR Ace Sanders, considered one of USF’s prime targets leading into the final weekend before National Signing Day, has verbally committed to South Carolina according to his mother.

“He really liked it when we went up there,” Twanda Sanders told PalmettoSports.com. “He was like, this is it. In his heart, that was it. He liked the coaches and the atmosphere. And he feels Coach Spurrier is an offensive genius and he will fit into their system.”

The Bulls remain in contention for Brion Carnes, Manatee’s quarterback. However, with receivers Jessie Hester and Carlton Mitchell no longer around, losing Sanders to South Carolina is a tough blow for the Bulls.

Now the question is whether Miami Northwestern DT Todd Chandler, the highest-rated recruit of all the players who have verbally committed to USF, will follow Sanders to South Carolina.

Sanders, who originally committed to Miami, is considered a soft commitment to USF. He has scheduled an official visit to South Carolina this weekend.

“I just want to check out the campus,” Chander told PalmettoSports.com. “I want to see how I fit in with the team and the coaches. I want to see the facilities and check out the academcs.”

Chandler has also visited Louisville, Syracuse and Colorado State. Louisville is considered the leader to land Chandler, but his mother lives in Tampa and he has spent time on the USF campus, so the Bulls are holding out hope.

I guess we shouldn’t expect much different this year….Holtz was placed in a tough situation by being hired so close to NSD.

Land who we can and give him a year or two to get it going.  We still have enough talent to compete and do very well in the BE.  After a season or two he will get his players and recruits worthy of BCS status.

I also like the fact that he is not wasting time and space with short term players (Bellamy and Rose)....build for the long term!

Yeah, tough spot for the new staff to really only have two weeks before NSD…Players like Rose and Bellamy were off the books the instant they took over since they provided little high-end value to program, and we’ll probably see a couple of players signed out of nowhere right at the end who have flown under the radar the way Jimbo Fisher did at FSU when he arrived in early ‘07 with just a couple of weeks to recruit; I think you’ll see a lot different type of class in ‘11 than next week.

When USF was considering firing Leavitt, many of us were concerned that it would really affect recruiting - dragging things out would, negative headlines would, firing him would, and replacing him would. Although Holtz appears to be a fine coach, those negatives were still going to happen, maybe just to a lesser degree. That’s the reality. Our program took a step backwards, and we have to live with it. But I believe that if Holtz is the right guy, the program will be much better off in the next few years; this year, his job was to salvage what he could of the recruits.

Scott….what can you tell us about the QB from LaGrange, GA that Holtz offered to on Wed.?  Apparently, he is visiting campus this weekend and is strongly considering USF over UF and UK among others.

He apparently was being recruited by Holtz at ECU and has kept on him to come to USF.  He is huge….6’4” 225 lbs.

Thanks.

Hey Hector, the Georgia QB you’re talking about is Jamius Gunsby, and you’re right, he is big…His high school in LaGrange has sent a lot of players to Kentucky the past few years and the Wildcats were considered the leader for him for much of the year; however, Holtz has obviously established a good relationship with him and Gunsby could be one of the kids Holtz signs who had no real ties to USF before Holtz came aboard.
