USF PG Dority to transfer

The story from correspondent Michael Manganello:

Sophomore point guard LaVonte Dority was not on the bench for the University of South Florida’s game against Florida A&M on Sunday and will seek a transfer away from the program.

Dority, from Chicago, Ill., came off the bench as a true freshman backing up Anthony Crater last season, playing 5.7 minutes per game and averaging less than a point. With Crater’s dismissal from the program for a violation of team rules in June, Dority figured to be the team’s starter this season.

Despite the additions of point guards Blake Nash, a transfer from Williston State College in North Dakota and Anthony Collins, a freshman from Houston, Tex., Dority began the season as the starter. Of the first nine games of the season, Dority started seven.

Collins recovered from a hip flexor injury that kept him off the court early in the season and took over the starting point guard position Nov. 30 against Virginia Commonwealth, helping Dority make the decision to transfer.

This season, he’s averaged 15.1 minutes per game, less than Collins (27.5) and Nash (23.9) and three points per game, less than Collins (7) and Nash (7.9).

It’s unclear where Dority intends to transfer at this time. Walk-on guard Mike McCloskey, a junior from Orlando Lake Brantley High School, joined the team Dec. 2.
