USF paid Neinas $25,000 in coach search

NCAA hiring specialist Chuck Neinas charged USF $25,000 for his “consulting services for head football coach search.’‘
Neinas is well-known in NCAA circles, often assisting schools in searches to fill high-profile positions in the athletic department.
According to an invoice obtained Wednesday through a public-records request by The Tampa Tribune, Neinas gave USF a $10,000 discount off his usual fee of $35,000.
When Florida State hired athletic director Randy Spetman in 2008, FSU president T.K. Wetherell paid Neinas $35,000 to assist in the search.
Neinas was also involved in USF’s search for a new AD in 2004, recommending current AD Doug Woolard for the position once he discovered background concerns of another candidate, Jon Oliver.
Oddly enough, Neinas also dealt with Spetman during USF’s 2004 search, recommending Spetman as one of the final four candidates to be interviewed for the position.
During that search six years ago, Neinas charged USF $30,000 according to the Tribune’s library.

It sounds like a lot of money when you consider that he earned it in about 2 weeks, but it’s always a good idea to hire an expert that spends time doing the research on all the best coaches and who’d be the best fit. To try to do it without that expertise is to ask a lot of Woolard, who oversees all USF sports and building new stadiums and ordering uniforms - it almost certainly would have gone bad because no one can be an expert at all of those things. We’ll know in a year or two if we got our money’s worth, but right now it seems like we did.
