USF Opens Review of Leavitt-Miller Incident

Posted Dec 15, 2009 by Scott Carter

Hey folks, been another busy day and I apologize for lack of blog updates—yes, USF99, that’s for you. It took me awhile to confirm some information and I didn’t want to post to blog until certain of a couple of items.

Anyway, click here for latest TBO.com story. A version of this story will also run in Wednesday’s edition of The Tampa Tribune.

I’ll be back later tonight with some thoughts and some basketball talk to preview the UCF-USF clash at the Sun Dome on Wednesday night.

Thanks for the update. It’ll be interesting to see the specific details of how this investigative process will work. At first read, it doesn’t look like anonymity is being provided (with the talk of ‘public record’) - which is a pretty fundamental requirement to help facilitate the gathering of accurate testimony in a whistle-blower type situation like we have here.

After all, these student athletes are dependent on Leavitt (‘the most powerful man in the building’) for their scholarship, he holds their future in his hands. They have nothing to gain by crossing him, and everything to lose.

In regards to the ‘public record’ part of the story, that relates only to USF’s final report of its internal review.

We won’t know who the school is interviewing throughout the process, or what that person says (unless of course they talk publicly about it on their own) but once USF is finished and ready to file an official review, that will become public record.

In my time covering FSU and the academic scandal that school has experienced the last three years, most of these reports have names redacted, but the information and process is revealed in the end, adding some transparency.

Scott….with your experience over at FSU, how long do these internal inquiries take?  How big of a distraction can this become between bowl preparation and signing day?

Thanks.

Hector, it’s hard to determine the length of these inquiries since all are different, but I can’t imagine this one taking nearly as long as the academic scandal at FSU…That one involved a lot more people and much more complex issues.

From talking some USF folks, this one shouldn’t take too long, but it could be several weeks for an official report to be filed. It really depends on how aggressive and serious USF’s administration considers this case.

As for being a distraction, it could be to Leavitt, but from what I can tell, most college-age players have way too many things going on for this to be much of an issue with the team other than perhaps for Miller. Thanks for checking out the blog.
