The University of South Florida men’s soccer team put an end to the nation’s current longest home win streak on Sunday, winning 2-1 at West Virginia in a game televised nationally on CBS College Sports.
Freshman Lucas Baldin scored on a free kick at the 74:42 mark to provide the winning margin, which snapped the Mountaineers run of 13 consecutive wins in Morgantown and gave the Bulls a win in their Big East Conference opener.
The victory was the third this season for George Kiefer’s squad over a nationally-ranked opponent, and the second in as many games. West Virginia was ranked 19th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, 11 spots behind UC-Irvine, which the Bulls defeated 2-0 in Tampa a week ago.
Dom Dwyer scored the Bulls’ other goal, his team-best seventh of the year, and goalkeeper Chris Blais made three saves.
USF, ranked 21st in the latest NSCAA poll, improved to 5-2-1 overall.
—-The USF women’s soccer team got off to a great start Sunday in its home match against DePaul, scoring two goals in the opening half, before inclement weather forced the game to be canceled with 6:17 remaining in the first half.
The Bulls and Blue Demons are scheduled to make up the game Monday at 11 a.m. at Corbett Soccer Stadium, but a tough break for Denise Schilte-Brown’s squad as the game will begin anew.
