The New York Times had an interesting story Tuesday that detailed how much Big East schools spent on their men’s basketball programs from July 2008 to June 2009.
The figures are based on the latest information available from the U.S. Department of Education.
I was surprised to see Marquette spent more than traditional Big East powers such as Georgetown, Connecticut and Syracuse.
Marquette spent more than $10.3 million on men’s basketball during the 2008-09 fiscal year.
At the other end of the spectrum is USF, which spent $2.9 million on its men’s basketball program in the same year.
That figure will undoubtedly go up this coming fiscal year with the addition of the Muma Basketball Center.
However, one area USF coach Stan Heath hopes the school spends more money on is travel. USF flies commercial most of the time, taking only a handful of charter flights this season.
Considering USF’s distance to most of schools in the Big East, it can take a toll during the season.
