USF hires Malloy as men’s golf coach; pitching coach Collazo resigns

USF hired a new men’s golf coach on the same day baseball coach Lelo Prado lost his veteran pitching coach.

USF announced this evening the hiring of Florida State assistant Chris Malloy as the school’s new men’s golf coach.

Malloy worked with both the men’s and women’s teams at FSU this past season and has been an assistant at FSU the past four seasons. He was one of 10 finalists for the Jan Strickland Award this season, an honor presented to the NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the class room.

“Chris is one of the outstanding young coaches in America and will be a tremendous addition to our staff,’’ USF athletic director Doug Woolard said in a prepared statement. “He has played a critical role in building one of the nation’s best programs at Florida State, and he brings great pedigree to USF having spent the last four years working closely with one of the nation’s outstanding head coaches in Trey Jones.’‘

Meanwhile, two days after hiring hitting coach Chris Heintz, Prado is searching for a new pitching coach to replace Collazo, who has been on Prado’s staff the past five seasons—one at Louisville and four at USF.

Collazo is returning to the Miami area with his family and plans to work as a private pitching instructor.

“He did a good job,’’ Prado said. “He worked his tail off for me for five years. I wish him and his family nothing but the best.’‘

Prado said the search to replace Collazo will open Wednesday and that he hopes to have a replacement named in a week to 10 days.
