USF-FSU game sells out—finally

Posted Sep 23, 2009 by Gregg Becnel

USF certainly did its part, but is anybody else surprised it took this long for this game to sell out? Anyway ...

The University of South Florida will play in front of a packed Doak Campbell Stadium when it takes on No. 18 Florida State Saturday in Tallahassee.

FSU announced the game sold out Wednesday. USF has sold nearly 12,000 tickets. The Seminoles will wear their white road jerseys as part of a “white out,” while USF will wear its home green jerseys.

“I like that. It’s exciting,” Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said of the throng of Bulls fans making the trip. “We’ve always had great support here. It’s been really a neat deal. There’s a lot of excitement about the game, and there should be.”

LONG AND SHORT: Leavitt hinted at the possibility of using two kickers for field goal attempts, depending on the distance. Eric Schwartz, who took over for a struggling Delbert Alvarado last week against Charleston Southern, would handle the short to mid-range attempts while Alvarado would handle those from long distance.

As a freshman, Alvarado hit a Big East record 56-yard field goal against Syracuse.

“(Delbert’s) done it before,” Leavitt said. “If we had to win a game and had to kick one from maybe 60, that would be something I would have to really consider because I know he could do it.”

Alvarado lost his job after missing his third kick in four tries to start the season. He is 1-for-2 from 30-39 yards and 0-for-2 from 40-49 yards. For his career, Alvarado has hit only 57 percent of his tries (26 of 46).

ODDS AND ENDS: Leavitt said because of a noon kickoff he plans to rotate heavily along the defensive line to help fight the heat and keep fresh bodies in at all times. … Sophomore CB Quenton Washington (ankle) will play Saturday. “He looked good (Wednesday),” Leavitt said. … To break up the long bus ride to Tallahassee, USF plans on stopping in Ocala to eat.

At least you recognize in your article that the Noles are ranked 18th, no thanks to you leaving them out of the top 25 with your AP vote.

Shallownole, I didn’t file this report. Gregg Becnel did.

Too bad people don’t keep things in perspective. This team is talented. Sometimes you have to spend a little to win a lot. I don’t like the bussing idea. Still believe we should have flown the players to the game. If the players are well rested and comfortable after a short flight, win the game, and then advance to a major bowl game, the money saved by bussing is more than paid back. Riding to Raymond James on the team busses was never a comfortable trip… so imagine five hours of that misery. If I’m a linemen, I’m looking for a skinny kicker to sit next to.

Use that bus ride and watch game film of the BYU game…Would love to see the fans follow the buses up. I remember FSU would stay at a hotel in Georgia before home games and bus back to Doak and the streets would be lined with fans.
Should I assume more than 12,000 fans will be for the Bulls. I think alot of people bought tickets via other means..?
Brett..why did you leave FSU off your top 25?...and if the Bulls shock the world where would you rank them?

Don’t both schools have had to agree to allow the home team to wear their away jersey at home? Why did Leavitt agree to wear the dark jersey for a hot noon game?

Terry, decision to bus was financial. AJK, I was one of 11 AP voters not to rank FSU this week. I ranked FSU 17 in the preseason, then 25 after they lost to Miami and I dropped them out after close call vs. Jax State. I only had one team fall out of my Top 25 this week and replaced them with Kansas. I have no idea where I would rank FSU if it beats USF. It matters what else happens across the country. USF99, USF was just trying to help out. I’m sure FSU would have done the same thing, if asked.

thanks for the reply…are you ever surprised at how different each ballot can be depending on location. Some have UM in the top 10 while others are not sold on them yet. UF needs to kill Kentucky to show me they are #1. UT did not look good at home vs. Texas Tech. The teams that have looked the best to me are Cal,UM,Cinn and UH (offence only)lol…
Have a Great Weekend
Go Bulls
