Based on USF’s performance in the NCAA’s latest report on Academic Progress Rate, here is the most important information I gleaned from the report: Should conference expansion explode into total chaos, USF’s football program appears a safe commodity academically.
USF’s football APR increased 21 points, from 909 to 930 – matching Illinois of the Big Ten for the largest improvement among BCS programs.
An APR score of 925 is critical to stay away from the NCAA’s glare, and USF has climbed above that minimum level. Teams scoring below 925 can lose scholarships and face other sanctions over time, including postseason bans and loss of scholarships.

The men’s basketball and baseball teams did well in the 2008-09 academic year – basketball had a 977 and baseball a 991. While single-season marks are strong, the four-year grades of 915 (basketball) and 913 (baseball) – all grades are on a 1,000-point scale—remain below the minimum level of academic success as defined by the NCAA.
USF officials are pleased at the improvement in its core athletic programs and appear confident the school’s student-athletes are moving in the right direction in the classroom.
