The University of South Florida’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved the financing plan for the renovation of the Sun Dome, paving the way for construction to begin on the 30-year-old arena on campus.

The total cost of the project is $35.6 million and the upgrades, which will include a reconfigured 10,000-seat bowl, adding a center hung scoreboard, concessions and restrooms at the concourse level, and restoration to the existing exterior concrete, are expected to extend the life of the Sun Dome an additional 30 years. USF will pay for the project using existing available funds, which include $10 million from the USF Foundation.

The renovation is expected to be completed in April 2012, which will force USF’s men’s and women’s basketball teams to play their entire home schedules at alternate venues. Those venues will be announced when the teams’ schedules are released.
