Upton Set For Vero Beach-Tampa This Week
Posted Jun 25, 2007 by Aaron Knox

Manager Joe Maddon said injured IF/OF B.J. Upton (quad) will play for Single-A Vero Beach against the Tampa Yankees at Legends Field either Wednesday or Thursday, with a weekend return in Cleveland the goal. More than likely, Maddon said, Upton will go through the pregame routine Wednesday and test his injured leg Thursday. Depending on how well he responds, Upton could rejoin the Rays this weekend in Cleveland or next week in Boston, if all goes well. Maddon also Upton will initially play second base to avoid the excess running playing the outfield would entail.
Also today, former Rays catcher Toby Hall is back at the Trop for the first time since being traded to the Dodgers a year ago. He slept in his own bed in North Tampa and made the old drive down the Veterans Expressway and I-275 to get to the Trop, and admitted to a little nostalgia.
“There’s nothing like playing in Chicago, but as far as living here, I’ll never move from here. This is pretty nice,” Hall said.
Hall, in fact, is in Chicago’s lineup, just his 11th game in a White Sox uniform. And here are those lineups:
White Sox:
Scott Podsednik, LF
Andy Gonzalez, RF
Jim Thome, DH
Paul Konerko, 1B
Tadahito Iguchi, 2B
Josh Fields, 3B
Luis Terrero, CF
Juan Uribe, SS
Toby Hall, C
John Danks, P
Devil Rays:
Akinori Iwamura, 3B
Brendan Harris, SS
Carl Crawford, LF
Ty Wigginton, DH
Delmon Young, CF
Jonny Gomes, RF
Carlos Pena, 1B
Dioner Navarro, C
Josh Wilson, 2B
J.P. Howell, P

can someone tell me why the heck Pena is batting 7th? the best hitting guy on our team is batting in the bottom third for a reason i cannot comprehend. Gomes and Young are both hitting very well, as is Wiggy and CC, and the rest of them. but still, it seems to make no sense to me.

RAYS TALKS: DAVE IS RIGHT. MOVE PENA TO 5TH IN MADDONS [ LEFTY / RIGHTY ].. SYSTEM >> THE RAYS HAVE A DANDY INFIELD THIS YR AND ALL ARE AT .300 >> PENA, UPTON, HARRIS AND AKI .. THAT IS IF WE INCLUDE BJ WHO WILL RETURN SOON >> LAST YEAR THERE WAS ... LEE, CANTU, ZOBRIST AND WIGGS WITH LOW [BA]>> I THINK THE BULL PEN WILL SHAPE UP BY SEPT. AND WE WILL HAVE 5 GOOD STARTERS TO START OUT IN 2008. GREAT IN 2008 !!

Things are looking better for the Rays. You can tell when the big complaint is what part of the batting order Pena is hitting. I agree but Joe M makes the decisions and for the most part I’m good with that.

The reason Pena was batting lower in the lineup last night is because he is hitting well below .200 vs lefties. He is hitting well above .300 vs righties. You may see Maddon sit Pena vs lefties when B.J. comes back to play 2B with Wiggy at 1B.
