ST. PETERSBURG—Manager Joe Maddon said center fielder B.J. Upton probably could come off the bench in this afternoon’s game against the Tigers if needed, but he probably won’t because he’s slated to started one of tomorrow’s two games in New York.
Upton rolled his ankle in the fifth inning of Thursday night’s game against Boston and hasn’t played since. But the injury isn’t serious, and he’s been doing some light work and hitting the last couple of days. Fernando Perez will get a third consecutive start in center field today.
Maddon said that he hopes to start around three players in both games tomorrow.
