BOSTON - B.J. Upton has convinced manager Joe Maddon his left sprained left ankle is strong enough to play on, so he’s in the lineup for tonight’s second game of the doubleheader against the Red Sox.
Maddon had tentatively planned to start Jason Bartlett, Ben Zobrist and Carl Crawford in only one of the two games, but they’re all in for the second game. Bartlett has driven in Tampa Bay’s only two runs in the first two games of the series (9-1 and 3-1 losses). Zobrist, who played center field in the opener, is in at second basre, and Crawford, normally the left fielder, will be the designated hitter. Regular DH Pat Burrell, who is 1-for-18 on the road trip, goes to the bench.
Maddon also confirmed that right-handed pitcher Andy Sonnanstine will fill the one-game opening in the rotation and start Wednesday at Baltimore.
Here’s the lineup:
Jason Bartlett, SS
Carl Crawford, DH
Evan Longoria, 3B
Ben Zobrist, 2B
Willy Aybar, 1B
Gabe Kapler, RF
Dioner Navarro, C
B.J. Upton, CF
Fernando Perez, LF
