King coach Alvin Davis doesn’t mince words when it comes to Lions junior quarterback Greg Windham.
“He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the county,” the coach said, adding Windham also takes the title of “the most underappreciated” signal caller in the area.
Windham, who is in his third year as a varsity starter, certainly got off to a good start in King’s season-opening win over Middleton, throwing for 161 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 32 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Lions hope a similar performance can come tonight in a big road game at Freedom.
Windham, who transferred from Middleton after his freshman season, has battled some injury problems his first two seasons. He missed a handful of games in 2008 with a broken leg and last year missed two games after sustaining a cut on his right (throwing) arm from the metal clasp on an opponent’s chin strap.
Provided he stays clear of the injury bug this season, Windham believes he’s primed to put together his best year.
“Over this summer, I made my biggest strides. I think I got a lot better,” he said. “My accuracy has gotten much better this year, my running ability. Just the key stuff.”
