University of South Florida junior Carlton Mitchell has been the Bulls’ big-play receiver through the first two games of the season.
The speedy Gaither High product leads the team with 10 receptions and 167 yards.
“He worked hard all summer,” USF coach Jim Leavitt said of Mitchell. “He’s done some of the same things in the first two games as he did last year with his speed. You’ve got to respect his speed. He can run as good as anybody out there. There’s nobody out there that’s going to be any faster than him.”
Quarterback Matt Grothe sees a difference in Mitchell this season.
“I think the biggest thing is his confidence is up,” Grothe said. “He’s always had the tools to play, but he gets down on his self sometimes. He’s done a good job of making plays this year and he’s doing a really good job when he gets the ball in his hands out in space and showing what kind of speed he’s got.”
INJURY UPDATE: Sophomore SS Jerrell Young, who broke his arm against Wofford in Week 1, will not play Saturday against Charleston Southern and could be out considerably longer.
“He’s out for a little while,” Leavitt said.
Meanwhile, the status of CB Quenton Washington (ankle) and WR Evan Landi (shoulder) for Saturday’s game remains uncertain.
“I’m not going to be real optimistic about Landi. Q thinks he’ll be ready to go tomorrow, but I don’t know,” Leavitt said. “If they’re not full speed on what they can do then we’re not going to play them.”
WEATHER ISSUES: For the second consecutive day, bad weather forced the Bulls to practice inside the Sun Dome.
“It’s bothering me now that we’re not out there running around,” Leavitt said.

This game is important to USF besides remaining unbeaten and avoiding an embarrassing upset, but Bulls need this game to solidify OL play, to fix voids on defense (especially at LB) and to continue improvement with running game; which are all necessary prior to the FSU game and start of BE play. Hopefully coaches can motivate Bulls’ players with the urgency required to meet those goals? Playing Charleston Southern alone will not provide much of an incentive for intensity. I’m interested to see how CJL deals with place kicking problems: does he use Schwartz to give him experience or does he stick with Alvarado?
