As competitive as University of South Florida senior QB Matt Grothe is, he understands the importance of getting redshirt freshman B.J. Daniels playing time during games – even if it means Grothe having to sit out a series or two.
“Nobody ever likes coming out of the game,” said Grothe, who needs just 89 yards to become the Big East’s career leader in total offense. “But at the same time [B.J.] really does need to get some reps under his belt and mix it up with defenses a little bit, too.”
Daniels took advantage of his brief playing time against Wofford, completing both of his passes for 30 yards, including a 22-yard TD, and rushing for 16 yards.
“I thought he did a good job,” Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said of Daniels. “He needs to play. He’s just too talented. And we plan on playing him. He’s awfully good.”
YOUNG UPDATE: Sophomore SS Jerrell Young (broken arm) may not miss as much time as originally feared.
“[He had a plate put in] and will try to heal that arm up a little quicker,” Leavitt said. “Can he play this week? No. But we’re going to be optimistic after that and see what we could do to get him going.”
Leavitt said the coaching staff is “messing around with a lot of different combinations” and is unsure who will take Young’s starting spot.
ODDS AND ENDS: Senior K Delbert Alvarado will wear Keeley Dorsey’s No. 10 jersey Saturday against Western Kentucky. … FS Nate Allen, who had a team-high 10 tackles and forced a fumble in USF’s 40-7 win against Wofford, was named to the Big East’s weekly honor roll.

Brett…any chance we see Grothe and Daniels in at the same time?
That would be something really tough to prepare for…..USF’s own version of the Wildcat, they could call it the “WildBull” formation.
But seriously, could it happen?
