Having already lost QB Matt Grothe to a season-ending knee injury, the University of South Florida has enlisted the help of Bulls softball coach Ken Eriksen to make sure B.J. Daniels doesn’t take any unnecessary hits.
“I didn’t want this to get out, but (offensive coordinator Mike) Canales has actually talked to the girls softball coach and he’s trying to help me out with my sliding,” Daniels said. “I haven’t played baseball since the 10th grade, so I kind of lost it and have forgotten how. But they’re trying to get me to do that a little more. Right now, I’m just falling, but they’re trying to get me to slide.”
LANDI TO GET WORK AT RECEIVER: Coach Jim Leavitt admitted Tuesday it was a risky decision, but No. 2 QB Evan Landi will again get reps at receiver during practice.
It’s odd, for sure, considering USF has plenty of talented receivers and Landi is just one play away from becoming the starting quarterback.
“You’re really rolling the dice on that one because who would be our third quarterback?” Leavitt said. “Our third guy would probably be (walk-on Ryan) Eppes, and he’s not ready. … I’d look pretty stupid if (Landi) goes out at receiver and gets hurt at practice, and then they’d say, ‘What did you do that for?’ I wouldn’t be able to answer.”
Landi began the season at receiver and had two receptions for 14 yards before being moved back to quarterback after Grothe’s injury. Landi saw mop-up duty at quarterback in USF’s blowout loss at Pittsburgh.
NO BONANI: Even though Maikon Bonani has resumed kicking at practice, the sophomore who suffered a back injury during the summer at Busch Gardens will not play this season, Leavitt said.

WR is not close to our strongest position, and we are not deep there. Erksin is out again, .Daniel Bryant is out, Hester still doesn’t look 100%, and no one has really stepped up this year besides Mitchell as a big play guy.
We have, when healthy, Mitchell, Hester, Love, Bogan, Griffin, and Richardson. There is a reason Landi had 2 catches before Grothe was hurt: he’s good enough at WR to play

Sorry, guys, but WR is one of our strongest and deepest positions. He is unlikely to get any downs there this year even with Mitchell’s injury. But we need him to be really good at QB, should BJD get injured.

I really like the idea of getting Landi on the field at receiver. In the event of catastrophe, we did move Victor Marc back to QB from safety. When i heard about that move I wondered if Landi would get back on the field.
Yes playing Landi is a risk, but keeping him off the field is also bad. Landi will not play QB at USF (barring injury). We need him to get all the reps we can at WR where he will make his name at USF. He’s a dynamic player to even be on the field as a freshman. It says a lot about him that the staff would even consider taking this risk.

You have to do whatever you can do to win a game TODAY. Losing the rest of the games because we don’t have depth at wide receiver isn’t a good strategy; putting a mediocre team on the field isn’t a good strategy. Putting the BEST team on the field is the ONLY option. If we get hurt, we get hurt. That’s the game. No guts, no glory. GO BULLS!

We need WRs, especially if Mitchell is out with his ankle sprain.
Landi already played WR this year, so it’s not like he’s not capable of doing it.

That’s ridiculous. Not only do we not need Landi injured while practicing at receiver (which he isn’t going to play this year), but we very much need him getting every rep he can at QB, because we’re one play away from him being the starting QB (and BJD, like MG, plays a pretty risky style of QB).

Oh, and Theo Wilson, who has seemingly done nothing since the FSU game. Is he hurt?
