Tresey Makings Rounds in Orlando

USF defensive coordinator Jim Tresey has been through this before.

A year ago, after losing his job at Cincinnati, he didn’t join the Bulls’ staff until after National Signing Day.

Since Jim Leavitt was fired on Friday, Tresey’s job status—like the rest of the assistant coaches—has been tenuous at best.

He has continued to show up at his office, but he also is exploring other options.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Tresey had not heard anything about USF’s coaching search.

If he goes….no big loss!  Get Pasquoloni (sp?) from Dolphins.

Yeah, I was hoping Tresey would help us slow down Cincinnati, that didn’t work out so well.

I do hope that the new Head Coach gives Kevin Patrick an opportunity to keep his job.

I hoped he’d do more for us, but we only had so many bodies built like what his defense needed… it would have been nice to see where it all was going after a few years. Good Luck, Joe.

Who knows, maybe Tresey will stick around with the new coach.  True, the defense was disappointing this season, but as Dan said, he was working with someone else’s players and as Scott pointed out he started with the Bulls waaay late.  Hard to succeed under those circumstances.  It would be hard to judge him until he’d been here 3-4 years.

And Cincy’s defense always looked strong under him, but Cincy as a team went undefeated after he left, which had to hurt. But does anybody think Cincy wil be a strong team this year? No, we all expect a huge dropoff, which will raise his stock again.

Holtz is gunning for the Tennessee job right now, you can bet!

Dan Sileo on WDAE is lobbying hard for Doug Williams as HC for USF. I respect Williams as a player, but since Sileo is a Cane, you have to wonder at the wisdom of considering a guy who has not coached in over 7 years. Williams did well as a high school coach and a college coach who took over for a legend, but that was almost a decade ago. He’s been behind a desk since then.

Sileo implies that only a black coach could recruit the good kids out of the hood in Miami. Like Howard Schnellenberger and whiter-than-white Jimmy Johnson didn’t do well with that ethnic group.

Aside from name recognition with alumni, I’m not sure what else he brings that would make him so special. He’s not a great speaker, either.

I didn’t know who Kevin Sumlin was until I checked. He served as offensive coordinator for five years at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops. That’s impressive, especially since he did very well there. Other reports say he was CO- offensive coord, which makes you wonder who was the real driver of the offense, until you read that now he’s HC at U of Houston where this year he beat Texas Tech and Oklahoma in back to back games.

Now THAT’s impressive.

USF couldn’t do that.

He’ll get my support if he gets the job!

My biggest gripe is USF’s pace…we can be USC as far as speed and preparation. Woolard was slow. If they knew they were going to fire CJL then they should have had a list of folks ready by the time he was fired and the process should have been done by now.

As far as Sumlin, there is no difference between he and CJL.  Neither has won a conference championship….both have had big victories (Sumlin - Oklahoma, TT and CJL Auburn, FSU, Kansas).  What matters is what you have done with the talent on board and were you able to win the conference with that talent.  Holtz has done that not Sumlin…..Holtz beat Sumlin with lesser talent.

Hey guys, thanks for chiming in here on the blog…been crazy busy past three days chasing the USF coaching story…as of this moment, not a lot new…trying to get a couple of leads..I do know from talking to a source close to Fulmer last night, his focus is on return to Tennessee…not sure that’s likely, but interesting scenario…his representative told me Fulmer never really seemed to factor in USF’s search despite some interest on his part…but as we have discovered, nothing on the coaching carousel ever seems certain until the deal is done.

Scott, I guess if I were Fulmer, I’d be thinking: if you are interested in me, your search is over - there is no search, no other candidates should be considered. Everyone knows him and his resume. He probably has a point in that regard. However, I think USF is reluctant to pay the big $$$ to get him.

Dumig wants Bisacchia, who has “won a Super Bowl.” Well, so did the water boy, then, right? He was a member of a team that won, so let’s leave it there, no need to stretch it. He’s never been a head coach at any level, so I don’t know wbout all that. I really don’t want a learning curve at HC.

Of the remaining names I’m hearing bandied about, I like:

Fulmer
Sumlin
Holtz
Bisacchia
Doug Williams
Tresey
Fedora

What other names are being thrown around?
