TAMPA - We’re getting a better idea of what it will take to pry DE Jared Allen away from the Chiefs, and it’s not very appetizing.
Word now is that the Chiefs will settle for no less than a first- and second-round draft pick for their disgruntled “franchise’’ pass rusher.
It’s hard to imagine the Bucs giving that up, especially when they have just five draft picks and so many needs. It’s questionable whether the Vikings will give it up, too.
Minnesota has clearly emerged as the favorite to land Allen, who still may visit the Bucs later this week, but they’ll probably stand firm on their offer of a first-round pick (No. 17 overall) and a third (No. 73 overall).
It’s good strategy really, because it’s doubtful anyone will give the Chiefs the two first-rounders they’d get if a team simply signed Allen as a free agent. And with the Bucs virtually unable and unlikely to better the Vikings’ offer, Minnesota’s offer will no doubt come in as the best one for Allen.
That will leave this whole thing up to the Chiefs, who will probably drag this thing out until draft day before deciding what to do.
Meanwhile, another trade target has emerged that may make more sense for the Bucs anyway.
The Eagles are reportedly looking to deal unhappy cornerback Lito Sheppard, and their reported asking price of a second- and possibly fifth-round pick for Sheppard is just a little more palatable than what the Chiefs are asking for Allen.
Again, with so many needs and so few picks (those deals for Jake Plummer and Brian Griese are really starting to look rather shaky) it’s questionable whether the Bucs have the ammunition needed to make such a trade. But a deal for Sheppard would fill an area of need.
The Bucs are sure to draft a corner at some point this year, but a deal for Sheppard would alleviate that need and give them a player who can step in immediately and contribute.
That’s more than the Bucs are likely to get from the draft, because their tendency, especially as it pertains to corners, is to draft them low and develop them.
This potential Sheppard deal seems to be a back-burner issue for both teams right now but as draft day nears it may gain some prominence and move closer to the front. We’ll keep an eye on it for you and let you know what, if anything, comes of it.
We’ll also continue to monitor the Allen situation. At this point, though, Allen is back home in California contemplating the Vikings’ offer, which is believed to be a six-year deal that includes $25 million in guarantees and carries a total value between $50 million and $60 million.

If you folks don’t see the value that a 26 year old phenom in Jarred Allen brings to this defense, then you truly are hard to please. Here’s a DE that’s been VERY productive 4 years in a row, he not only gets to the QB with frequency, but he has a great knack for causing fumbles, it’s like getting a much younger Simeon Rice who is way more skilled at stopping the run. If the Bucs can pull off this trade, then they’ll have a MUCH better chance to play in the SB in their own back yard! A great defensive line can improve the ENTIRE team!! I’m in favor of this trade, no matter what.

For the record, I think we should trade for Jared Allen, but I find it funny. If this was a 26 year old black football player w/ 2 DUI’S would all of u be in favor of this trade or would u be throwing around the “THUG” word? Interesting.

I’m a native New Yorker. All anyone around here cares about is wins & losses. As such I see your comment more as stirring the pot than as something interesting warranting discussion. I don’t mean this in a way to cause offense. I am simply stating that color is so irrelevant on the field of play that I can’t imagine people treating Allen’s issues any differently if he was white or black. I hope I am not alone on this one. Plenty people here are already against bringing him on board because of his past it seems anyway, regardless of race.

Come on Reginold. Enough with the race card crap. Who cares!!! What an idiodic comment to make. Do you really think we give a crap if a football player is black? This guy can chew up any offensive takle in the league. I think your upset that he is white. How about that? Do you have a problem because he’s white? Whats that make you?
Suggest removalPor (REGINALD GRAY) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
OK, Why is he not considered a THUG? Explain Mr. “WHY U PULLING THE RACE CARD” Is Anonio Bryan a THUG? just curious.
I like Jaren Allen and they we could use him, but I dont go judging these guys like everyone else does. Im just sayng, be consistant in your criticism of players. I dont see consistency. If u want to call that the “RACE CARD” So be it. Funny how that word get thrown around too when people dont want to talk about the subject of RACE and Media coverage.

Reginald, I don’t care if he was green or lavendar, it makes no difference to me. What I don’t want is a guy on the verge of a suspension and have to give up 2 first round picks plus sign him to an extension for 6 years @ $10 a year. Personally, I like Greg White (what color is he?) and think he’s a damn good player who may develop into a double digit sack guy next year. It really makes me scratch my head when I read ridiculous comments from people who obviously have a race issue.

Reginald, a guy who has 2 DUI’s is not a thug, he’s an idiot alcoholic. A guy who goes to Strip Clubs and pulls guns on strippers, or a guy who gets into a knife fight outside a nightclub, or a guy who beats his pregnant wife or girlfried is a thug, white or black.
Anotonio Bryant is not a thug, he’s an immature fool that can’t deal with authoratative coaches, but I like him and think if he grows up, he can really help this team.
Before you decide to throw out the race card, decide for yourself what’s accepatble vs not acceptable.

Reginold, you need to change your focus in life. What white trouble makers are you talking about? Lets not have an attitude just because the last few big names to go down in the NFL as “attitude problems” and slammed by the media (Pacman Jones, Vick, Chad Johnson, T.O.) happen to be black. Can you defend the actions of these people? When someone white or black acts like these guys they also will be labeled as “attitude problems”. Please, your comments are completely unfounded and ignorant. And just for the record I don’t think the Bucs should take Allen. I prefer to focus on White (the balck guy).

Reginald you just need to shut up
Suggest removalPor (REGINALD) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
NO one is answering the question. WHY IS JARED ALLEN NOT CONSIDERED A “THUG” but Antonio Bryant, Jeremy Stevens were?
Suggest removalPor (Tony West) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
How in the world is the Griese trade shaky? Ridiculous comment in the article. We gave away a 2009 sixth round pick for a QB qho gives us one of the top ten backups in the league, who’s extremely familiar with our system and who puts up great numbers in this type of offense. A tremendous upgrade at the QB position who will push the hell out of McCown.

Reginald, Again, you need to define THUG and see if it applies to Allen. From my viewpoint, I don’t view an alcoholic as a Thug, a moron, sure, but not a Thug. I never considered Antonio Bryant or Jeramey Stevens a Thug either. It seems to me that you have some bigger issues here than just this…

Forget Allen Already!!!besides Greg White did you notice the play of Jovan Haye!!!Spend the money on what you have!Give away Draft picks?are you kiddin me!!!Did any one notice the Chemistry in the lockeroom last season!!These guys actually enjoyed themselves and pulled and cared for 1 another…it Translated into a Division
Suggest removalChamp.Bring Allen in and you have “Lockeroom Cancer””

To Mitch, u r the only person who has made any sense and I agree w/ u 100%. I never mentioned Pacman because I cant defend that idiot, my point has always been that people that write these blogs and comments, not u Mitch, but for the people that fit the shoe and wear it. BE CONSISTANT IN YOUR CRITICISM OF PLAYERS. And PS, just because someone talks about race, dont become so defensive and give the whole ” RACE DOESNT MATTER ANY MORE SPEECH” Again Mitch is the only person who has made any sense. That being said, I think the Bucs she try and sign this guy.

Reginold, sorry I could’nt continue the debate, I have a job…. Good job Mitch. Thank you for shuting up Reginold. I think he is a very angry and bitter young man.

If the Bucs can’t get trades done with either of those two players, maybe they can trade for Anquan Boldin. He wants to get traded. Hes a 1,000 yard receiver when he plays more than 14 games a season and he is only 27. He would be nice for a #2 WR.

Well Allen is not going to be a Buc, hes now a Viking! Oh well he was worth to much anyways. \=

The race thing with this Reginald guy is nothing new, I used to get all kinds of biased opinions while rooting for Mike Alstott, and almost everytime it was from a race other than caucasion. In every case, the words “slow white guy” (referring to Alstott) was always in the conversation, and I simply had to enlighten them that the reason I loved Mike Alstott was the passion and heart that he ran with, I could care less WHAT color he was, and I think most of his fans feel the same way. Sorry to bring this up, but it made me feel like I had to apologize because a white guy happened to excell in a position dominated by blacks…whatever!

Well I just heard that Lito Sheppard was down here today to visit the Bucs! Hopefully if the Bucs do trade for Sheppard he can stay health.
