TAMPA - We’re getting a better idea of what it will take to pry DE Jared Allen away from the Chiefs, and it’s not very appetizing.
Word now is that the Chiefs will settle for no less than a first- and second-round draft pick for their disgruntled “franchise’’ pass rusher.
It’s hard to imagine the Bucs giving that up, especially when they have just five draft picks and so many needs. It’s questionable whether the Vikings will give it up, too.
Minnesota has clearly emerged as the favorite to land Allen, who still may visit the Bucs later this week, but they’ll probably stand firm on their offer of a first-round pick (No. 17 overall) and a third (No. 73 overall).
It’s good strategy really, because it’s doubtful anyone will give the Chiefs the two first-rounders they’d get if a team simply signed Allen as a free agent. And with the Bucs virtually unable and unlikely to better the Vikings’ offer, Minnesota’s offer will no doubt come in as the best one for Allen.
That will leave this whole thing up to the Chiefs, who will probably drag this thing out until draft day before deciding what to do.
Meanwhile, another trade target has emerged that may make more sense for the Bucs anyway.
The Eagles are reportedly looking to deal unhappy cornerback Lito Sheppard, and their reported asking price of a second- and possibly fifth-round pick for Sheppard is just a little more palatable than what the Chiefs are asking for Allen.
Again, with so many needs and so few picks (those deals for Jake Plummer and Brian Griese are really starting to look rather shaky) it’s questionable whether the Bucs have the ammunition needed to make such a trade. But a deal for Sheppard would fill an area of need.
The Bucs are sure to draft a corner at some point this year, but a deal for Sheppard would alleviate that need and give them a player who can step in immediately and contribute.
That’s more than the Bucs are likely to get from the draft, because their tendency, especially as it pertains to corners, is to draft them low and develop them.
This potential Sheppard deal seems to be a back-burner issue for both teams right now but as draft day nears it may gain some prominence and move closer to the front. We’ll keep an eye on it for you and let you know what, if anything, comes of it.
We’ll also continue to monitor the Allen situation. At this point, though, Allen is back home in California contemplating the Vikings’ offer, which is believed to be a six-year deal that includes $25 million in guarantees and carries a total value between $50 million and $60 million.

This trade could be good on many levels. The first being: Looking at the draft class it looks as if we’re going to take a corner in the first and wait for a 2nd tier WR to drop to us in the 2nd. but if we pull the trigger on this trade we can focus on getting the best wr in the draft plus we’d have a top notch corner added.
The only bad this is that we’d have to give up ANOTHER pick for him.
2nd by doing this trade we know what we’ll get in Lito, if we draft a corner in the first round we have a good idea of what kind of player he is but we won’t know if his skils translate to the NFL.I believe this deal makes more sence for us based on our needs

I think that Lito would be a great addition to this team. I still think that the bucs should trade out of the 20th pick and pick up a 2 and 3rd round pick for it and take Trevor Laws in the second round and a WR and then ship their 5th round pick for a definate starter in Sheppard.

To trade for Allen is absolute stupidity, to trade for Sheppard could be good, depending on the price. I don’t think we could afford to give up a 2 and 5 for Lito, and I would hate to lose 2 picks out of this year’s draft because it looks to be very deep in areas of need (WR, CB, RB).

Well duh…I’ve been saying this for weeks. I can’t understand why we haven’t traded for Lito already. We give the Eagles this years 5th, and next years 2nd. Then we are free to pick up quality WR and DT in the first and second. We can still get a pretty good CB in the 3rd or even the 4th round. Anyway you look at it, this trade would fill a hole and make us better.

I thought the trade for Griese was a 2009 draft pick, and was only a swap of draft picks. Or was it a 6th rounder this year? If so, I’d be upset about the Griese trade.
Didn’t we give up our 6th and 7th rounders this year for Bennett, Ryan Sims and Plummer? Two role players and potentially $7 million from Plummer seems like a good deal for two picks that don’t have a great chance of making the team.

I was wondering why we haven’t moved on offering Sheppard a deal prior to now but I agree a CB makes much more sense than adding Jared Allen. If they make Sheppard an offer hopefully the Bucs will wait and offer Philly 2009 picks for Sheppard, if they don’t land Jenkins in the draft or another high rated corner. This might be the year to get a CB in round 1.

the asking price for allen appears to be very high. sheppard would be a great add however. the price seems fair since he is still in his prime. also we need our first round pick for a quality reciever. get claytons butt out of town.

The NFL is so screwy in certain ways. A proven CB like Lito Sheppard is worth so much more then the aggregate of a 2nd & 5th round pick. I understand that there are salary cap implications that a stud taken in the 5th round and signed to a 3-5 year deal help ease. But please, so often a 5th rounder, if not a bust right away, is kept simply because he is young and has “upside” while other productive veterans get sent packing. Force a deal down the Eagles throat for a 3rd & a 5th but if that falls thru, take the deal at a 2nd and a 5th and consider a major need, replacing a CB, a settled issue.

According to Newsday, Atlanta is shopping it’s first round (No. 3) pick. Not that they would deal with the Bucs! Bucs should hold tight and use all of their five picks in the draft.

To many of these high priced free agents seem to never come up to what they were before they left there team. Some get hurt, some need time to learn new schemes. I just don’t think giving the future for one or two players makes all that much sense.

Let Allen and his 2 DUI’s go play in lovely Minnesota, don’t want or need him and his baggage!! Lito Shepard on the other hand is another story, get hot Bruce Allen!!

So what exactly does the Griese deal have to do with this and why does it look shaky now? It was a late 2009 pick they gave up for him. Wouldn’t have much value in a trade right now. Actually 6 and 7 round draft picks are rarely important pieces in trades for big names. The bigger problem is they don’t have any players other than Simms that other teams could be interested in and that they wouldn’t mind losing.
And let’s just wait and see if Garcia makes it through the season without injuries before we start calling the Griese trade shaky. I’ve got a lot more confidence in McCown and Griese as the backups than McCown and Gradkowski/Simms. If Garcia does go down suddenly Bruce Allen will be a genius for making that deal.

I have to wonder what is wrong with Lio Shepphard?
If he is so good, why did the Eagles spend so much money to replace him with Samuels?
It doesn’t make sense.

allen’s off field issues are too big for the price. 3 DUI’s and according to the KC Newspaper he recently opened a bar in KC. If true, his doesn’t sound like a guy who can stay clean.

I keep hearing from everybody: Why didn’t we sign any recievers in FA?
Suggest removalAm i wrong or didn’t we sign Antonio
Bryant? I say he was one of the top quality recievers that was availible in the FA. He might of had a couple off
the field incidents but the man is a talented reciever. Give him a break.
I am predicting he is going to work out well for us. And his off the field issues are in the past.
“LET’S GO BUCS” Let’s pick up a rising star at CB and go out there and win some football games!!!!
Por (Dan Shreve) on April 21, 2008 (Suggest removal)
I agree let’s totally forget about Allen he’s not worth all that money. Plus those draft picks? That is crazy.
Suggest removalBut Lito Sheppard in other hand I believe we can make that happen and would be a smart move. He could be the top quality CB we are looking for that can fit in right off the bat. Give them our 2nd and 5th rounders. Then pick up a top quality WR 1st “Avery”
from Houston University with a time of 4.32 40yrd 192 lbs.Blazzing speed with great hands and not affaid to go across the middle. Or a Deshawn Jackson
who would also be a good return man at
169 lbs. And in the 3rd and 4th round pick up a QB and a DT. What could we really pick up in the 5th round in this draft better then Lito Sheppard I mean really?? “LETS GO BUCS”
Por (Chris) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
I agree with the majority of posters, baring any unreported injuries, the trade for Lito is a smart play for the Bucs. I think the Bucs should then seriously consider trading down/out of the 1st round in exchange for additional picks.
Suggest removalPor (HFXBUC) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
the ideal trade is with Atlanta. Give them pick 20 (They then get Dorsey adn Brohm) for their 2 early picks in round 2 or one of their seconds and a 3rd. 4 total picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of this draft is just what we need. The RB’s, WR’s and CB’s in the second and third are all very nice players and all close to the value we’d get at 20.
No way Atlanta does it but someone will come after Brohm and a second and third would be worth it.

Building through the draft is an ideology that the Bucs can’t afford to do, THIS year. The future of the Bucs is NOW. Gruden knows this and so does Allen. Gruden has two more years on his contract. If he doesn’t show improvement this year, he’s gone. And by improvement I mean: deep into the playoffs and/or making it to the Big Dance.

people get real lito will be an impact player right away more than likely he will turn out to be our best corner, and his speed will help out the lame linebacker everybody around here thinks can play forever you know number 55. if he was a horse he’d be put out to stud allready
Suggest removalPor (jason jesse) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Hey David, a valid question, but there is nothing wrong with Lito. The biggest knock against him is a nagging injury that caused him to miss like 11 games in the past three years.
On a scale of one to 10, Lito is a 7, maybe 8. The Eagles feel Asante is a 10, and felt they upgraded. Whether that is true or not, Lito is stil an above average CB in his Prime.
This really does make perfect sense for the Bucs. We can get our much needed WR in the first, instead of drafting a CB in the second we give our 2nd for Lito. That still leaves the 3rd and 4th for some depth. DT and QB maybe.
Suggest removalPor (KSJ) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Lito Sheppard would be a good move. He’s young and is one of the best corners in the league. In the draft you would just have to focus on playmakers at receiver / punt returners and offensive tackle, if the Bucs pick up Sheppard.
Suggest removalPor (Cody Ubben) on April 22, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Much rather draft a corner than spend two draft picks on Lito Sheppard, who is injured as much as Kelly always was for us, and then have to sign him to a big contract. Look at this years draft crop of corners, why would we go after another injury problem, we have plenty of those already.
